Windows 7 sharing printer to XP secure? Hello all,
Soon I will install Windows 7, I like to share my printer.
The printer should be used by a Windows XP computer.
I read some treads in this forum about how to share the printer, but I was wondering if sharing everything without a password is a good practice?
Thanks upfront for reading my question,
Kind regards,

Nope. Enable password protected sharing. Enable file and print sharing. Ensure there are passwords on each machine for the accounts that will be in use. Make sure each computer has a different network name in system properties. Install the XP driver in control panel, devices and printers by right clicking the printer. I can't direct further because my printer is not installed right now and I don't have options available to look at. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number self built OS 7600.20510 x86 CPU P4 550 3.4 GHz HT running at 3.5 GHz Motherboard MSI PM8M3-V (MS-7211 v1.x) Micro-ATX mainboard Memory OCZ 2 GB(2x1GB) DDR400mHz running @ 414 mHz Graphics Card HIS Radeon HD 3850 IceQ 3 Turbo HDMI Dual DL-DVI AGP Sound Card MOTU Traveler firewire studio interface 192 kHz 24 bit Monitor(s) Displays 22" widescreen Acer X223W LCD, 17" Compaq P75 CRT Screen Resolution 1680x1050 and 1280x1024 Keyboard Logitch Classical Keyboard 200 Mouse Logitech Mediaplay cordless PSU 350W generic Case Cybertronpc, it glows blue Cooling stock cpu fan, Ice-Q 3 gpu and system, many case fans Hard Drives SATA I x2 WD, 400 GB and 120 GB, SATA 2 WD Caviar Black 1 TB Internet Speed 1792/448 kbits/sec Other Info SATA II PCI fake RAID adapter, 1 GB Readyboost, original ATI Remote Wonder (even works with WMC perfectly), Logitech Rumblepad 2 game controller x2 |

torrentg,
1. How to enable password protected sharing on Windows 7?
2. How to enable file and print sharing?
3. I don't know how to put passwords and accounts on both machines?
4. I guess you mean installing XP printer drivers on the Windows 7 machine?
Is it a good idea to make a tutorial about sharing Windows 7 printer with XP?

open "Network and Sharing Centre" and click "change advanced sharing settings" you'll see options for enabling passwords etc in there. These passwords are the same as your account passwords (i'm thinking tho that you don't have passwords set on your accounts tho) | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number tw33k OS Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) SP1 CPU Intel 3770k 4.6GHz Motherboard ASUS Maximus V Formula Memory 8GB (2x 4GB) Crucial Ballistix Graphics Card Sapphire 7950 (1060/1600) Sound Card On Board Realtek HD Audio Monitor(s) Displays 27" Acer B273HU (via HDMI) Screen Resolution 2048 x 1152 Keyboard Microsoft Wireless 5000 Mouse Microsoft Wireless 5000 PSU Corsair AX750 Gold Case Corsair Obsidian 800DW Cooling Corsair H100 (2x AP-121/2x UK-3000 push/pull) Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB

tw33k,
Thank you for your quick response!
Do you mean that I have to setup user accounts in Windows XP, and also have to create the same user accounts and passwords in Windows 7, that will be used when printing from XP to the shared printer on Windows 7 machine?

zx81 If you want to password protect your LAN connection then the user accounts on both the XP box and the win 7 box must be password protected. The passwords do not have to be the same | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number tw33k OS Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) SP1 CPU Intel 3770k 4.6GHz Motherboard ASUS Maximus V Formula Memory 8GB (2x 4GB) Crucial Ballistix Graphics Card Sapphire 7950 (1060/1600) Sound Card On Board Realtek HD Audio Monitor(s) Displays 27" Acer B273HU (via HDMI) Screen Resolution 2048 x 1152 Keyboard Microsoft Wireless 5000 Mouse Microsoft Wireless 5000 PSU Corsair AX750 Gold Case Corsair Obsidian 800DW Cooling Corsair H100 (2x AP-121/2x UK-3000 push/pull) Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB

Thank you all for helping me,
I succeeded in sharing my printer on Windows 7 secure.
Created a print user account on Windows 7, and gave permissions to print and manage print jobs.
Named workgroup same on XP and Windows 7 machine.
Logged into the Windows 7 network from XP by connecting to the Windows 7 computername, and supplied the account name and password for the Windows 7 print user.
Installed a .inf printerdriver, needed to edit the .inf file to reflect correct printer name, the name had to be changed exactly to the shared printername.
