No network or internet connections on win7 install

    Hi

I am trying to install win7 from original installation disks on a samsung R580M laptop. The install goes fine but I don't get any wifi ethernet or network connections installed. Device Manager shows the question marks on network and ethernet. I suspect this is because there is no win7 wifi driver. Where can I get this or can I use wired ethernet? Thanks in advance

Drivers would come from the manufacturer. R580 15.6"High Performance Notebook | Samsung Support UK You'll want wifi and chipset drivers. Install the easy network manager as well just in case that contains drivers.

Double-click the ethernet and wireless devices in the "Network Adapters" heading of the Device Manager.
When their properties windows appear, click the "Details" tab, then select "Hardware Ids" in the drop-down list.
You will see strings that have VEN_ and DEV_ as part of them.
Advise us what the exact 4-character codes are that follow VEN_ and DEV_.
Those vendor and device codes will tell us the description of the ethernet and wireless devices in your laptop.

    Hi

Thanks for your help. Yesterday I did manage to find and install the Atheros wifi driver and have got that working fine. As you suggested, I also have obtained from the Samsung site the lan and chipset drivers which I have also installed. Now device manager does not show any errors. The new computer shows up in my w11 network. I also IE8.0 does not work and says cannot display the webpage. I instead installed the latest firefox version that supported win7 and it runs well however it fails to render https sites (SSL error.

The Ven and Dev are Ethernet Ven 11 and Dev 4381. Wifi Ven 1681 and Dev 002b.

Finally when I tried windows update, it failed.

This is a long post but I am glad that I have been able to get great information from you and the forum. I feel like I am almost therel.

    Thanks in advance.

You didn't provide the correct 4-character vendor and device codes for that laptop, so I'm guessing it has:
    Marvell Yukon ethernet
    Qualcomm Atheros wireless
Anyway, I'm glad to hear you found drivers for those devices and got them working.

When you do a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1, Internet Explorer 8.0 is installed, so it needs to be updated to version 11.0.
But version 11.0 no longer supports a lot of websites, so they will fail to load properly or will display an error message.
A third-party browser, such as Mozilla Firefox ESR 115.6.0, is required.

Windows Update will not work after a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1.
This install and update guide should be helpful to you.

Thanks flavallee and townsbg. This is very helpful. Since I know so much more now, I think I will redo this and go with the installation of SP1 right away, following the install guide. I will likely have more questions as I go along. And yes, you were right about the devices. I will mark it as solved once I get the elements in the install guide finalised.

I finally have got this to work following your guide until the windows update portion. After several unsuccessful attempts, I searched the forum for the error message 80072EFE and found that the windows update itself needed to be updated. I was then able to install all the updates and win7 seems to be running well after that. After all the important updates were installed, I found that win7 ran very smoothly. I also found that microsoft edge was the best browser to run.
I appreciate very much the help from you and others without whose help I would not have been able to do this.
I will mark the thread as solved. Thanks again.

Even though you ran into a hiccup, I'm glad to hear you finally had success.
