How do I share files with a PC running XP?

I wanted to share files between a PC running XP Pro and my Win Laptop through a router with ethernet cables. I tried a lot and lot (have done system restore for 8-10 times in this process) to do this by following the tutorials and guides all over the internet but in vain. I don't wanna mess it up again, so someone please share the exact correct way of doing this.

In simple terms just make sure that both machines are using the same Workgroup name, make sure the files are shared and that Network Discovery etc. are turned on then in the advanced sharing settings then run the Network Connection setup wizard from the XP machine which should allow it to pick up the Win 7 machine and share files or folders.

There are other methods for doing this using the Public folders, just read through the following link.
Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP

You can also network with other Op systems even if there is a Homegroup set up on the Windows 7 machines so a few different options for setting this up.

I made those changes again now and managed to get the shared folder of Win 7 into the My Network places in Win XP. But I'm unable to see the XP machine in the Network folder in Win 7 Earlier it used to show the machine and used to ask for login credentials which it kept saying wrong even though I'm logging in using administrator credentials. And the speed is really annoying, it transferred the file at a poor 127KB/s speed

I can't imagine why XP would suddenly not be visible to the Win 7 machine unless there is something wrong with one of those machines.

For XP to see machines with more recent Op systems you would need to install SP3 for XP via the Windows Update Center.
