network Windows seven desktop to new Windows 8 laptop

I have been using Windows Seven on my HP desktop and have a home wireless network set up using a Linskys router. The desktop is wired to the router. My Windows HP 8 laptop is working wirelessly downstairs on the home network. On the laptop I can see the files on my desktop, but I cannot see the Windows 8 laptop files on my desktop. Is this because the desktop is connected to the router by a cable? If not please can I be advised how to allow the Windows Seven desktop see the Windows 8 laptop files downstairs

The network connections are probably not the issue if you can get Internet access. I use Windows, Macintosh and Linux computers and can 'see' the other computers. It may be the File and Printer Sharing settings on the computers and any password or permissions that need to be checked, I haven't had a need to set mine up yet as i use a NAS for any needed shared file storage.

On the laptop have you shared the folders you need to access? It's nothing to do with how you connect.

I have shared them now and I can see the folders on the desktop but I cannot access them. I am told you do not have the permissions. Also while working with the laptop downstairs I have now lost my internet signal , but the signal is OK at the desktop. The changes I made to laptop has caused me to lose my internet signal and I am trying to get the signal back at the laptop,

You will need to change the file permissions for the shared folders on the laptop to allow access by the desktop across your LAN. This process is undoubtedly a bit daunting for the less experienced but I can at least point you to the forum's tutorial on the subject.

Permissions - Allow or Deny Users and Groups

The tutorial is for Windows 7 but also applies to Windows 8. You might need to enlist help from a friend for this.

Whatever has caused loss of connection it won't be the file sharing you have been doing. You may need to move the laptop to a location with a better signal reception from the router. Upstairs/downstairs often results in a weak signal.

Thanks for your stimulating comments! there was a hardware glitch on the Laptop: it was resurrected by disconnecting the power and also the battery. I then pressed the on button on the laptop for I minutes. I then replaced the battery and powered up the computer again with the signal from then Cable modem being connected directly to the laptop. I got my internet signal back and have continued this morning. I created a home group password common to each computer and worked with file sharing settings and file access setting. I do not require a unique password for the Laptop so password requirement for Laptop is turned off. is turned off. It seems that right now I can see my Desktop files from Laptop and vice versa, but let me work with this a while.

Actually the Users folders on the Windows 8 machine are shared out by default so there is no need to add any permissions for this.

With Windows 7 the Users folder is also shared out by default but the Username folder is locked and those folders do require you to share them out unless you first create a Homegroup.

I made a Home group in each computer and it has the same password for both computers.

Setting up a Homegroup would be the easy way to share as it doesn't require adjustments to the NTFS security settings and is much safer to use compared to a wide open Workgroup where anyone connected to the local Workgroup would have access to all shared folders.
