A great thing to follow with computers and networking equipment is "If it is not broken, don't fix it.":) This is something that always gets me in trouble because I like to tinker with my computer, router, and etc.

If your router has been working just fine for the last 3 years then I think upgrading the firmware is optional. If you are comfortable reconfiguring the router if something goes wrong and you won't have anybody in the household attacking you because the internet is down, here is a how-to from DLinks website on how to upgrade the routers firmware: How do I update the firmware on my DSL router? | D-Link UK

By god, do Talktalk still give those out? I had one of those 10 years ago, and it was terrible then! Ask them for a DSL-2780 - they at least have N capability.

Sorry, I digress. Don't flash the firmware, (you said that you are with TalkTalk in another thread), the firmware on those routers is NOT stock, it is a custom firmware provided by TT. (I bet you get a grey screen with 3 lights when you log onto the router, and have to click "advanced" to get to the D-Link menu). Talktalk won't support you if you brick it due to a failed unauthorised firmware update.

I do have a brand new unopened router "HUAWEI HG533", but could not see the point of changing it at the time as the one i am using at the moment was working fine. Do you think this new one would be better ????

yes the new router you have is better than the one you currently are using. I did see you will need to have the firmware upgraded to at least this version: Firmware Update 1.13T otherwise you might have some issues with it. You can read some about it here: TalkTalk Huawei HG533 Router Review | Router Reviews | What is a Router | What Router is Best for You
