High latency issue onboard Realtek adapter

    Hey everyone

On Thursday, I received my copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. I skipped the Vista bandwagon, so I was moving directly from Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32-bit) to Windows 7 Home Premium. I opted to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7, as I had no issues when running the 64-bit beta.

As it turns out, I seem to have encountered an issue with my network adapter on Windows 7. Using any speed test site, such as speedtest.net, I get an extremely high ping (500ms +). I have tested another machine behind my router running Windows XP and there is no problem. Also, on the speed.io website, which tests connections per minute, I can only get around 200 on Windows 7, whereas I could get 2000+ on Windows XP with the same hardware.

Strangely, in games like Counter-Strike: Source, my ping is normal and in the 25-60 range on most nearby servers. Also, when running the ping command from the command prompt, most servers return a result lower than 100ms ... which is also normal. So, I don't understand why on speedtest.net, pingtest.net, and dslreport's flash speed test.. I get a ridiculous ping time of 500+ms. Web browsing does seem to be slow as well, as images take longer to load then they should.

I'm not sure whether this is a driver issue, or what. I have tried disabling both my firewall and AV software, so they are not at fault. I've tried 3 different version of the drivers for my NIC. One from the Gigabyte website, and two from Realtek's website (they released an updated version yesterday). My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R (rev 1.1). I have all of my system specs listed on my profile if anyone needs to know more.

I'd appreciate any help or ideas from anyone. I tried posting this on a different forum and didn't get any responses.. maybe this one will be different. While it's not a huge issue.. web browsing does seem to be slower than it should, because of the increased latency. I just can't figure out why it doesn't affect games/traceroutes/etc.

    Just to make clear
The high latency issue has been tested and occurs on the latest Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Internet Explorer - although on Google Chrome, the latency is around 200-300ms - a little less than Firefox.

I tried these tests with AV and firewall software disabled as well.. no effect.

Also.. my desktop is connected with a <10ft ethernet cable directly to my router. The router is NOT the issue. I was having no problems on Windows XP SP3 32-bit.

Ignore the variation in speedtest results - it's a result of my ISP's PowerBoost technology - my actual bandwidth package is 5Mbps/1Mbps
Also... a wireless Windows XP SP3 machine gets better connections per minute on speed.io - Why is this?

I have encountered issues from speed test sites. Such as high ping. It is something I have grown used to. Mainly its just the speed you have to worry about for the most part. You can try to disable ip/v6. you wont need it unless your connected directly to the internet.

    I disagree.

Latency is important too. On websites with a lot of images, the effect of high latency is very apparent.

Disabling IPv6 has no effect, which is as it should be.

Also.. IPv6 isn't necessary even if you're directly connected to the Internet - I can guarantee you that almost every residential ISP hasn't deployed IPv6.

IP/v6 has caused alot of connectivity issues in 7.

Once again I have issues myself with internet speed test sites.
I have one issue that causes a total crash of the os.

Besides if you are getting good pings in games, it may just be another speed test + win7 Issue

    That may be true...

However, disabling IPv6 has no effect on this issue. As I've said, though.. this isn't just some issue that isn't noticeable - anything web-based is affected by the high latency (The loading of images, web-based games, chat rooms, etc..).

I've already tried communicating with Gigabyte and Microsoft on the issue.. which was a sad waste of time on my part. I don't think this issue is going to be resolved any time soon, so I'll probably end up just buying a new NIC soon and hope that I don't have the same problem.

Dont buy an older card if you want to prevent the issue. Try to wait a few weeks till 7 certified equipment hits the shelves. But if you see one pick her up lol. I always love the smell of fresh hardware in the morning XD

I never said I was going to buy an older card.

I said I tried to use an older card, which there were not drivers for (I did say that, right?)

Anyway.. the card I picked out on Newegg is fine.
"Plug n Play support for Win7 (32/64 bit, build 7600)"

I'm assuming the issue is just faulty drivers from Realtek, and I'm willing to spend 20 bucks to probably fix it getting a different NIC. If not, ah well, I can use it in another machine.

Just thought I'd throw in there that I have similar problems with Realtek cards. I've had two motherboards (Biostar, and Gigabyte) where I have high jitter times, lost packets, and random pings when I do tests to sites like pingtest.net

So I went out and bought a $30 Intel PCIE network card, disabled the onboard Realtek card on the motherboard and ran the same test.

My jitter goes from 27ms (avg) to 2ms (avg). My pings improve, my upload speeds improve as well.

The Realtek cards are probably fine for most people because they don't care about having a high quality connection. But I do.

For anyone else having issues like this I'd highly recommend finding a quality third-party card and installing it. For me it was $30 well spent.
