    Prefer ethernet cable over WiFi?

Is there somewhere in Windows XP, 7, and 8 to have it use the ethernet cable only when plugged in even with WiFi enabled or connected?

When my Ethernet cable is plugged into the modem, it automatically supercedes wireless connection.

I.E. - When using PS3, I plug in cable and that is the one that is recognized - if I unplug it, wireless takes over.

That only happens on your PS3? It's nice that that does that, but that's Linux, and who knows if Windows is doing that, as it's a bridged connection so I'm assuming it staggers both and I want one to always override the other.

On a Laptop there is usually a small button to turn WiFi OFF or On. Do you have a laptop or desktop ?

Not Linux- this is Windows 7 Pro.

If I unplug the Ethernet cable from modem, the wifi takes over automatically.

If I plug in Ethernet cable, that takes over, even though Wifi is enabled.

On both PC and laptop (Both Windows 7 Pro.)

    Isn't that what you want?

Yes, my laptop has a WiFi switch... that's very inconvenient. I simply want Windows to use ethernet over WiFi.

Then what do you mean by PS3? You said: "When using PS3, I plug in cable and that is the one that is recognized - if I unplug it, wireless takes over." The PS3 (PlayStation 3) is a Linux operating system.

Yes, Windows using ethernet over WiFi is what I want.

I was just giving you an example.

If I am on my PC and disconnect the Ethernet from modem, wifi takes over -plug it back in an Ethernet takes over.

Why don't you just try it?

Your example was of a Linux computer (the PlayStation 3) while the thread is about Windows 7 (the forum in fact). Just because Linux does it doesn't mean Windows 7 does it.

Windows 7 doesn't give me any indication that it's using ethernet over WiFi when it's plugged in and conversely doesn't tell me it's using WiFi over ethernet when it's plugged in and unplugging it of course would mean it's using WiFi so unplugging it and plugging it back in is useless because it still doesn't tell me when it's using WiFi and when it's using ethernet.

I'm turning off notifications for this because I'm getting more useless replies than useful ones.

In vista, win7 and win8 that happens automatically!! It's the routing table that defines how to route stuff. Both the wifi adapter and the ethernet adapter are most likely connected to the same router. So they have the same dhcp server that gives the same "default gateway". But to access the default gateway you can send it wired or wireless. Wired will be used automatically... it has a lower metric http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrics_(networking)
