Allow Local Network Port 21 Access

Hello,

I am using windows 7 Home Premium and trying to allow a program to use FTP port 21. I have an electronic device that I need to access through port 21 on the local LAN, but currently I have to disable the firewall each time I want to use the software. I did go into the firewall advanced settings and make a new rule for outgoing and created a rule for FTP 21, but it still blocks my software? Can someone let me know what I missed in the rules setup?

Thanks JR

Does the FTP server resides in the device or in your computer? If it's in your computer, you need to make an incoming connection rule instead of outgoing. Outgoing is also allowed by default in Win7, unless you blocked it afterwards.

But regardless, remember that FTP protocol needs additional ports to be open for data connections (21 is used for command channel only). Extra ports will depend on the configuration of both the server and client and what port range they agree to use, and whether passive or active mode is chosen. Please clarify what mode are you attempting and where who the server and client are.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply and I apologize for my late response. What is strange, it was all working prior to the last few Windows updates?? On my LAN is my Windows 7 machine, and also my Lutron lighting control system. I have Lutron software on my PC and when I change anything I telenet into port 23 with their software (works fine) and then I upload the new file. Until recently it has always uploaded? So do I need the incoming rule for this to make connection again?

Thanks Jr

For what I understand, you don't need any incoming connection, as your computer is trying to connect to the device. Just outgoing will suffice, and again, by default Windows leaves all outgoing connections totally unprotected, so it's unlikely to give you problems.
Updates, in theory, should not affect anything too.

What might be blocking a connection may be a third party firewall (do you have one?). Antiviruses sometimes comes with one and it might be interfering. But most likely, I would bet for a driver problem, that could conflict with a recent update. Try reinstalling the drivers and control software for this device.
Rolling back to before the recent update with a restore point may help too.
