    Using AP as main router

    Hi,

    I have a quick question about a product I recently purchased. It's the wireless extender TL-WA830RE (http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/d...del=TL-WA830RE)

This device has more coverage than my current router.

My doubt is: does this also work as a normal router? I don't think it has DHCP function.

I have a cable modem which connects to my current router. The cable modem is NOT a router itself, it connects directly to the internet only one device (a PC or a router). So I'd like to know if I can replace my current router with the WA830RE.

It has the function "Range extender" and also "AP". But, as I recall, AP can't assign IP addresses. Am I right?

I need to know before trying because I have to move a couple of things around because it's not easily accessed (physically).

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

You won't be able to replace your existing router with the Access Point. You will need to utilise your existing router and add this access point as an extender if you want to boost the wireless signal.

It doesn't look like it does DHCP as you've stated. Your router will need to do this. Any DHCP client requests will be passed onto the router (presuming that's your DHCP Server).

    Thanks.
It's kind of a mess. I think I'll connect the router to the extender/ap with a 10 meters (32 foot) network cable and that will be all.
