Windows 7: No Network or internet

I have done a full clean install of Windows 7 32 bit on a desk top and having major problems connecting to the net.

I have an onboard VIA Rhine II fast ethernet adapter connecting to a Thomson TG585v7 router. The router is fine as I have a laptop on XP connect to it on a home network.

The problem on my desktop is that although Windows 7 will find and connect to the home network the connection is shockingly slow. It takes over half an hour to load Google home page or the log into the router itself (i could draw them faster).

As far as the adapters drivers, i have tried the following 32 bit drivers with no success.
v1.09 (auto installed by 7)
v1.12 (from VIA's website for 7)
v3.84 (for XP and vista in compatiblity mode)

After reading other forums I have also tried the following:
adding in a random network address on the adapter
turning off the Remote Differential Compression
even disabling the offload in cmd prompt

And still no joy, can someone please give something else to try!

Just a thought - have you checked it's not an IP number clash? Is the router set up as DHCP server or are you manually assigning IPs to the two machines? If the former, try rebooting the router; if the latter, check the numbers are different (via ipconfig) and if not, re-assign one of the machines to a different number.

I hadn't checked the IP addresses. It was set up as a DHCP server and have definately reboot the router on several occassions. I've now double checked all addresses assigned for both machines and even tried manual assigning, this again has proved fruitless.

Leave router off for 10 minutes in case heat is an issue with it. This also ensures a reboot of it which can't hurt.

Plug ethernet cable into a different port on it.

Use Wireshark to analyze packets and perhaps you could pick up on something or gain clues.

Anohter test attempt is to open services.msc (from start menu search, hit enter.) Disable IP Helper Service and DNS Client service. Reboot.

From command prompt, netstat -an and netstat -ano commands for clues (try variation/combination of switches - leave out a, n or o.)

No problems with the router, had it off for an hour and changed ports and cables around.

I have disabled IP helper and DNS client, no joy there.

With regards to Wireshark and netstat, i'm afraid that level of techy is a little beyond me. What should I be looking for or would you like me to post any reports?

With netstat command, you can see what established connections there are. If you use it like this

netstat -b

you could see which programs have these connections. If something is connected that you don't know of, it could be part of a root kit. Malware basically.

With Wireshark, you could load a page, like your router config, and watch what is going on in the communications. See where it hangs or is slow the most. You could possibly use that info to search or whatnot to see if other users experienced something.

I'd also check other machines on the network to see if they are using a large amount of upload. If they are, you can not download so fast at all because to download, upload is needed too to acknowledge packets received. If another macine is using all of your paid connection's up, no go for everyone else. Or slow. Like your case.

Another thing to try is to disable the wireless radio on the router and only connect your machine to it. Then test.

If you transfer files from one machine to the next, how is the speed doing that? Good?

Also, a Windows Update could help. Maybe it will have a better driver for lan adapter.
