Simple File Sharing. No Go. Need Help.

I've tried to set another drive on my Win7 machine to Network with XP. I have a couple of folders
already which work fine. But this latest one dings at me with "...is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.... when I try to Open it in XP. *******s, aren't they ? !!

It is OK is the Network left hand column in Win 7. SHows there correctly and lets me access it.
I've tried to Duplicate everything as set on the one that works... I notice Properties-Sharing on that one is
coloured, the new one isn't but there's no colour-me-now option.

Have Googled and fluffed around for hours, slowly going mad. I tried the "credentials' thing but as far as I could tell none are set.

Are there some things I can try? Thanks for any help

    Hi there,

Do you have Workgroup setup in your network? Have you added the Everyone group in the shared folder?
Also, create a duplicate User Name and Password on the problem computers?

Hi 2xg, sorry for delay but I was trying to get a bit further ahead with new info... but no luck.

Yes I have a workgroup (called mshome). I can see the folders there n Xp NetworkPlaces too... but not use them.

I DON"T have a username/password for the ones that do work, and really would like to keep it like that. I guess my big stumbling block is whay do some folders work, and some don't. Are there different "Everyone's " ?

    >Have you added the Everyone group in the shared folder?

I think so, "Everyone" shows under Computer - Right Click Drive - Properties - Sharing - Advanced Sharing - Permissions - Group Or User Name. Then all 3 Allows are ticked.

For troubleshooting purpose can you please do this?

Also, have you tried accessing the shared folder in question by using the computer's IP Address?

What type of Security/Firewall program(s) are you using on both computers? Have you tried disabling the Firewall?

The XP machine has AVG, Win7 has MSE. I've no firewall on either other than what comes with the OS. I haven't attempted to disable it (and wouldn't know how to). Happy to try that if you tell me what to do - and on which/both machines? As for IPs I know how ping something from the DOS screen (and suspect a hit as Explorer can see then) but don't know how to expand that method to a drive or folder.

But all that aside, what would make another folder work and not this one? My thinking is idf any drive is being shared much of the necessary 'workings' must be correct ?

Doing this gives the exact same result as double-clicking in MyNetworkPlaces. Ones that work still work and those that don't bring up the same "is not accessible. You might not have permission blah blah...
Looks like calling it this way has added another icon under Mshome, called the IP Address and is identical to the previous one called Win7-pc. Is that usual behahviour ?

How to disable Firewall in Windows 7: Turn Windows Firewall on or off - Windows Help

How to disable Firewall in Windows XP: How can I turn on or turn off the firewall in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later versions?

Try accessing the shared folders vice versa and see if you're able to do it. If not, please provide us ipconfig/all coming from the Windows 7 and XP computers for review. Here's a tutorial: Basic Requirements Before Posting your Networking Thread

Hi, I turned OFF the firewall in XP and I still could not access the shared folders. So then I turned OFF the Win7 firewall. No change. So then turned them both OFF and still nothing. The same ones that work, still work and the others don't.
So just about to read the instructions and get the ipconfig/all to you.
