How to have computers on a domain access each other

I have a small domain - Windows 2000 - with several computers, including a Linux server connected via Samba. One computer (work station) runs Windows 7 and another (notebook) runs Windows 8. I would like to have the notebook able to send files to the workstation. What do I need to change so this can happen?

    With appreciation...

Looks like some of your hardware is pretty old.

I don't run a server but do have a NAS/Network Attached Storage HDD plugged into my Router using an Ethernet cable, all computers that can access the Internet through the Router can have the NAS mapped and store/read files on it whether WinVista, Win7, Win8.1, Linux Mint or Mac OS X. The NTFS formatting of the HDD in the NAS is not a problem. The setup has been much less frustrating than keeping a server doing its thing. I do have Server versions of Windows but haven't found a pressing need for it yet.
