Remote desktop broken after latest Windows Update

Windows 7 Home Premium with patch to allow incoming RDP session has worked fine for years but quit working after latest Windows Update.

When I attempt to connect from the remote computer, it appears to connect momentarily, but disconnects immediately. On the remote computer, after the momentary connection, I see "please wait for the local session manager" for a microsecond, and then I'm disconnected.

I have Googled and read just about everything I can find, but I can't solve this.

In the event log, I see a remote login and then an immediate logoff.

I have repatched termsrv.dll, too, after replacing it with the original file first.

Have you tried TeamViewer? I gave up on Remote Desktop years ago and have used TeamViewer since then countless times without a hiccup. It is free for consumer/non-commercial use.

Otherwise try a System Restore to before the problem began. Then hide the Updates offered until you can install each one singly to find the one that's causing the problem, which often will resolve itself.

I don't like Team Viewer because it is a huge resource hog.

I notice that on about one in a hundred connections it runs up the remote PC's CPU. Hardly a reason for me to give it up since Remote Desktop fritzed about half the time.

Let us know how the first-line defense steps go, as there are others including next SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

BobX has the workaround. Uninstalling KB2984972 fixes the issue for now, but I'm afraid Microsoft will push another security update that will break this again. I hope a new termsrv.dll patcher comes out that is a more permanent solution.

Thanks BobX.

New patched termsrv.dll is already issued.

You should run install script after you have KB2984972 installed.
I've tested on x64 and all is fine.

I ran across that, too, but I was unable to figure out how to download it without giving them my credit card number.

I should have clicked on the top link. Thanks.

I wonder how important KB2984972 is anyway.

Thanks again BobX

The update is not a security update so it isn't that important and wont be a security risk if you do not install it.
