    Network Settings Tool?

Does anybody make software you can run on your computer that will show all your network settings and any other settings that will affect your networks speed and functionality?

I am network stupid I have tried to follow network tutorials to setting up networks in the past either you get lucky and they work or unlucky and it does not work, the biggest problem is you have to go to too many places, too many windows to open too many different locations to go to, too many options, WAY TOO MANY things are assumed by the tutorial authors, way too many things are assumed that users understood 100% the first time it was explained to them, most the support I have encountered assumes since the instructions were read they were completely understood by the user who has not been to network college and setup 500 network systems.

Their has to be software that will scan each of your computers on your network go to ALL the locations you could possibly ever go to and report back your settings, I would also thing it could WARN you if you inadvertently changed a setting that creates a security problem OR better yet has caused a problem that will not allow your network to function properly.

I watched about 20 how too videos on youtube for setting up a network, was reading some of the comments and one comment was made "how do you tell if your private home network is accessable by the whole world or just you? "

I would think having the results of a system scan showing all your settings might help resolve many network problems I am having.

Is their such a tool or software?

    Thanks in advance.

There is a little programme that might just fix your problem. You WILL need to know your
download speeds to set it properly.
If you go to this site, the porgramme is there to download, it is called TCP optimizer
There is also help there to be able to set up your computer as well.

Before I get too far into that program it looks like its just for speed issues, I am looking more for connectivity issues, speed is not a issue on my network connecting to other computers is, I can connect on a few computers but not all, then I wonder if the computers that can connect to others are fully exposed to the whole world.

I have yet to find a comprehensive way to audit ALL my computers to see what their settings are and use those results to see what settings are wrong or right.

Once I get all the computers on my network sharing and talking to each other I would also like to find any bottle necks in the system that might be slowing it down, right now the computers that can share can play DVD's from one computer to another with no lag.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

It's almost impossible to find one tool to monitor/analyze what's going on in your network. I use a variety of them.
Here's a list of open source network utilities that might be of helped.

    Hi
thanks for the reply, I followed your link and looked over about the first 10 on the list, all these programs seem to be targeted to a functional established network environment and are designed to monitor performance.

I am looking for software to help get a home network up and running, made fully functional and to see if in the process of making 100 clicks on 50 different pages by someone who does not have a college degree in networking didnt inadvertently open up their network or one of the hard drives to the public.

Once I get the network to function and properly share and ensure we have not exposed some part of this private network to the world wide web would like to then investigation performance and bottleneck issues.

Maybe I have not found the right tutorial yet, I need a step by step tutorial that will show me how to share my hard drives with other computers on our home network the network is comprised of computers running windows XP, Vista Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Running into stupid things like having 2 identical external hard drives on the win8 machine, followed the exact same procedure for both drives to share them, can see BOTH drives on all the other computers, can only access (read and write) on one of the drives.

Some of the machines can access shared C: drives some of the computers are denied access "see system administrator" that is me I have no clue, NONE of the MS help or trouble shooters have been any help.

I feel the root cause of the problem is the confusing complexity of the whole network settings, I can not and have never been able to picture a work flow path in my mind to flollow the endless settings that are behind something simple as wanting to share ALL hard drives on EVERY computer in our network with each other but at the same time want ALL hard drives on EVERY computer in our network protected from the internet, we want NO access to any of the computers or drive made available remotely for ANY REASON by anybody including administrators, this also includes visiting family who brings their portables here, and connects to our network only want them to be able to join our network so they can access the internet yet have no access to any of our other computers by using our network.

Again looking for a audit software to analyze my system and return a comprehensible report showing what the network settings on each computer are currently set to so can figure out things like why 2 identical hard drives on the same computer with the same share settings can not both be accessed by another computer on the network.

    Thanks, again.
