So you know you're not alone, I'm having major problems as well. All of the same symptoms, other than the auto update and reboot.

So far from what I've found out, it could be the firewire, but the main culprit that I believe it to be is faulty drivers. I have Linksys' WUSB54GC and I've seen MANYYY with this adapter having trouble. Some fixed it by installing the vista drivers for their adapter under vista compatibility, and since I've reinstalled my drivers (even though it's with the same one...) earlier today, I haven't had much of a problem. I'm using the windows 7 64 bit released drivers (sadly I didn't see any vista driver downloads on the official site...a-holes took it away so you're forced to upgrade to windows 7).

I don't know if there was a resolution to this matter, but I can tell you that I receive a similar problem every evening with my Windows 7 system. My wireless NIC gies offline and I lose all connections wiith errors relating to DNS and/or DHCP, Master Browser, time, and so one. First, it would never be the ISP if you can't get to local network resources (within your home network). My belief is that there is a foul MS update within the system, and the best suggestion I can offer is to uninstall the MS updates one at a time until it is resolved. One post in particular pointed to KB976098. I am going to try removing that update tonight and see if it helps. If there are any other suggestions, please feel free to share them.
