Problem connecting to Internet router

Windows 7 Home Premium

While trouble shooting Networking, 'Network Trouble Shooter' reset my Internet Router a few times. Since then the computer does not connect to the Internet automatically when switched on, as it used to do. It used to connect so fast that it could not even be noticed on the task bar icon. Now it has to be manually connected each time, and takes about 45 seconds to connect. In 'Manage Wireless Connections', 'Automatically Connect' is selected. What can I do?

Try to turn the power off to your modem/router for 5 minutes then switch it back on, restart the computer once it's fully back on and see if that helps. Are you using a 3rd party software to connect your wireless or Windows built in wireless manager which is usually better then such 3rd party ones

This did not work. I am not using any third party software.

When the computer is switched on, the Wireless icon has a red cross on it and takes 45 seconds to connect. When it has been in 'sleep' mode, and at wake up, it has a yellow asterisk and takes over minute to connect. The cross and the asterisk has never appeared before, in three years since the laptop (Acer 5250), was bought.

I forgot to mention earlier that the Wireless Adapter was also reset a number of times. My ISP checked the Internet router and gave it clean bill of health.

Thank you,

The cross on the wireless icon indicates the network adapter on your computer is switched off or unavailable, not that the router is not working. Look for it in device manager and see if you can't update the driver ...

Windows fond driver software by browsing the computer and updated adapter driver, but problem remains. I also found that Windows has stopped 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Adapter' from working because "there is a problem" with it. Would this have anything to do with the problem?

The cross on the wireless icon is momentary. It turns to yellow asterisk after that.

Sorry for slow answers as I'm not very familiar with your laptop. Why were you trouble shooting it in the first place and trouble shooting Windows can't reset your router as you need to be logged into it to make changes so you must mean the wireless device on your Acer. You also don't list what antivirus you're using. After some Googling I found this thread and follow the steps in post #35 and read the other info there and hope it helps. Don't worry about changing your DNS to the Google one or changing the router to channel 8 until you try the other steps. Once you deleted all the profiles (Make sure you know your Wireless network password) use the Set up a new connection or network wizard to create a new connection in Control Panel, Network and Sharing

That did it! Now it connects almost instantaneously. Like you said I did't have to do the DNS and channel 8 'stuff'. Could also please tell me what the command prompts reset.log and winsock reset catalog does in the Wireless device?

Thank you,

Kind regards

I was fiddling with so many settings trying to connect my Windows 7 with XP. Whatever went wrong would have been at that time. Thank you indeed for all the help. Best regards,
