Homegroup listener file not found

I recently tried joining a homegroup but when i went to the option homegroup was not available. I ran the troubleshooter and it turns out the homegroup listener service was not runnin but when i try to run it an error message pops up saying:

"Homegroup cannot start the homegroup listener serviceon local computer.

Error 2: the system cannot find the file specified"

I have tried doing a repair with the install disc but it doesnt show my OS to repair. Also i dont have the microsoft diagnostic and recovery toolset available to me through the disc even though another computer running same OS does in the house. I have searched online for the files but they seem to be non existent and there doesnt even seem to be a microsoft fixit for this issue either. What options are there apart from a clean install of windows 7 are there as i cant find my activation key so i would prefer not to do that.

I have also tried the update option as said in a few forums but when i try that, it says i must cancel first then re run the update. When i try this in explorer it does not work.
