    VPN connection setup (WinXP-Win7)

    Hello!

I'm trying to learn and setup a VPN connection (to simulate a "real" one).

I have a Windows Server 2008 machine with VMware Player installed on it. I have installed Windows XP in the VMware Player for this VPN "simulation".

I googled for the VPN setup and set the XP virtual machine as the VPN server (a lot of fiddling around, it's my first time setting up a VPN connection). The Server/XP machine is on a "192.168.2.xxx / 255.255.255.0" subnet, on a second router I have, my other computer (Win7) is connected a router above (192.168.1.xxx / 255.255.255.0), so that one utp cable goes into my Win7 PC and the other into the second (192.168.2.1) router. So with my Win7 computer I can simulate the situation as if I was connecting from somewhere over the internet, since the other cable from the first router goes into the WAN port of the second router (which is then connected to the Server/Vritual XP machine). Sorry for overcomplicating this explanation.

Anyway, after setting the XP server I have opened (forwarded) the TCP & UDP port number 1723 (as I've read on the internet) in the subnet's (192.168.2.1) router for the XP's IP address.

Then I fiddled some more, set a user name and password on the XP which I then used to create a VPN connection on the Win7 PC and fiddled some more when I learned that I have to set IP range on the XP and not let it give it automatically (I don't understand a lot of this yet) - and finally I was able to establish the connection! :)

But then what? I don't know how to browse files of the Virtual XP with my Win7 PC. I tried sharing a folder in XP but nothing happened, in Win7 PC I can see that I am connected but don't know what to do from here on...

I'd be grateful if you could please help and point me in the right direction.

Another thing I'm concerned about is security - how safe are such Windows VPN connections in the real world (over internet), opened ports and all?

    Thank you in advance! :)

How do I find the files on the other PC through the VPN? Do I have to map a drive? I don't know what I'm missing or doing wrong, please help me.
