Can't connect to Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4000n printer

    Hi there,

So I found this thread and followed it, How do I install an HP Laserjet 4000 printer

But I just can't get any sort of connection between my windows 7 laptop and Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4000n printer

I've tried using the windows printer wizards, installing drivers and changing configuration on the printer itself. That advised in the above thread.

I'm not very network savvy. All I want is a direct connection between the printer and my computer, or use a ethernet switch (if i can?) so that a number of household computers can connect.

I have an edimax 5-port fast ethernet switch.

When I plug the printer into the switch I don't get a light like a do for the laptops. There are two lights for each port, I'm presuming one's a 'in use' light and the other is a 'successful connection' light.

I also have a spare wireless router I could use if that's helpful'

I've tried adding local printer, creating a standard TCP/IP port but when prompted to write the printer IP address that I got from the control panel of the printer itself it can't find it. I continue to manually find a driver and install it but get errors when printing. I can't connect to the printer when I write it's IP address in a the search bar of google chrome.

I've spent most of the day on this, please help

The printer doesn't have a usb, just an ethernet and what I'm guessing are some other network connections.

After typing in the printers IP address I get this message box.

Then I choose the HP Laserjet 4000 Series PCL 5 driver, although my printer's a 4000n.

There are also a PCL6 and a PS version. .
