Have you tried updating your wifi drivers? From what I've read on MSDN, the miniport adapter requires a "hosted network-capable wireless adapter", so I think once you update your wifi driver, you should see the miniport adapter again.
Don't use your driver tool - download the driver from HP (even if it's just a Vista driver), then uninstall your wifi card (delete all drivers, if that option is presented) and let Windows discover it. If Windows can't install it, connect via ethernet and go to Windows update to see if a suitable driver is found, downloaded, and installed. If not, then install the driver you downloaded.
