Windows 7: Missing Windows 7 VWiFi

Missing Windows 7 VWiFi

Since replacing Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100) 32 bit with Windows 7 Professional 32 bit purchased from I no longer have Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter displayed in my list of network connections. The computer I use is a HP Pavilion dv6439nr Notebook PC. I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional.

Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter had been displayed in my list of network connections when I had Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100) installed. Although it sounded interesting I was not all that concerned about vwifi because there seemed to be almost no information about actually using it. Then I found out about the app Connectify and I would really like to use it.

I have used Driver Magician Lite to backup both my Windows 7 Release Candidate drivers and my Windows 7 Professional drivers. Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter is included in the Release Candidate drivers, but is not present in the Professional drivers. I have tried right clicking on the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter setup file netvwifimp.inf and selecting Install but I get an error message that says "The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation"

Windows 7 Release Candidate was supposed to be the Ultimate Edition of Windows 7, but from what I have read vwifi is supposed to be in all Windows 7 versions. Perhaps vwifi was disabled in my particular 32 bit student edition, which seems unlikely BUT not impossible considering that Windows games were disabled by default. Perhaps it's a driver problem, but why would the Release Candidate have worked but not the Professional version now.

I am hoping that someone will please advise about what the problem may be and how to potentially resolve it.

Have you tried updating your wifi drivers? From what I've read on MSDN, the miniport adapter requires a "hosted network-capable wireless adapter", so I think once you update your wifi driver, you should see the miniport adapter again.

Don't use your driver tool - download the driver from HP (even if it's just a Vista driver), then uninstall your wifi card (delete all drivers, if that option is presented) and let Windows discover it. If Windows can't install it, connect via ethernet and go to Windows update to see if a suitable driver is found, downloaded, and installed. If not, then install the driver you downloaded.

Problem resolved

I uninstalled the current driver and then installed the HP driver for my wireless card, then restarted, and vwifi did not show up. I uninstalled the HP driver and then in Device Manager I right clicked the Network Adapters directory and clicked "Scan for hardware changes". Windows automatically installed a driver for the wireless card as well as the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.
