I'm not really clear yet. You have access to the modem but not to the router? Or you plug directly into the modem? Everyone in the building uses a common router/modem? Still don't know if you're wireless.

Hi all there is here is the small modem thing I showed in the photo. There is nothing else. There is a cable from my computer to that box, a phone line from that box to the wall and the electrical power wire to the wall. nothing else (so no, not wireless). From my research I believe, and maybe just maybe I could be wrong here, I am connecting via a PPPoE--this based not on actual facts but something else I read online.
What I read there is (and I quote): "Unlike DSL in the US, the Chinese DSL requires a special program on the main PC connected modem.
Your connection type is PPPoE if:
1) Your ISP gave you a user name and password which is required to connect to the Internet
2) Your ISP gave you software such as WinPOET, Enternet300 that you use to connect to the Internet
3) You have to double-click on a desktop Icon other than your browser to get on the Internet
If you do not have a Service Name, leave the Service Name field blank. "

I hope this helps

Then you plug directly into the modem, with no router, and the modem goes directly to the ISP, rather than via community access in the building. If you want to try a different DNS provider, you will have to spec it on the computer, or add a router. The other option is to try a different modem, or to see if the modem has a firmware update you can apply.

According to what I have been told just this morning, yes "each apartment has its own wiring" the exact words I was given by a Chinese assistant here, which I take to mean what you said. As to, "try a different DNS provider, you will have to spec it on the computer"
I will need to research how to do so. as to the router I will wait until we move into our new apartment--hopefully it will be oin only 2 months as they have said
thank you

Extremely slow LAN connection between 2 W7 PCs
I have 2 computers connected through a Linksys SE2500 (http://www.linksys.com/en-apac/products/switches/SE2500/). It's either CAT 5e or 6. There is 20 feet of cable total, maybe. The 2500 is connected to another router. The PCs are W7 home and W7 pro. Working off the home PC to the pro PC is...

Laptop drives/ram/possibly OS upgrade advice needed please
My Dell Inspiron 17R N7010 is getting a bit tired now although itís clean and tidy bugs wise and runs fine if a little slowly for me. A friend said it can help a lot if you put more RAM in and as big a hard drive that it can sensibly take. So I did a little research and splurged out on 2 x 4GB...

psu possibly overloaded, extremely slow booting
I've got a bunch of problems that seem to have stemmed from an overloaded PSU, so here's the story. I was running my PC off a Cooler Master 460 that's about 3 years old. Occasionally it would shut down unexpectedly while playing Borderlands 2, usually after 20 minutes of play time. I suspected...

Videos Extremely Slow on LAN Connection
Hello all: I am currently living in a dormitory in Germany. I was given a cord to connect to the LAN on the wall, as there is no free wi-fi in this dormitory. A few days ago, Youtube videos and other videos played just fine, as usual. Now, however, it takes 30 minutes to load 5 minutes of a...

Any advice to improve windows 7 performance?
I have a horribly outdated motherboard, so upgrading the CPU isn't an option, and upgrading the RAM would be a waste of money. So what can I change through software to make it a little more responsive? I was using build 7077 x86, 7100 x64 seems faster in some places, but slower in others. with just...
