How to Enable Multiple Remote Desktop Sessions

I would like to remote into computer without ending current live session
After researching a little I found the instructions below which seem like they should work but do not
    Can anyone help?

    Enable Multiple RDP Sessions
    1. Log into the server using Remote Desktop.
    2. Open the start screen (press the Windows key) and type gpedit.msc and open it
    3. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Connections.
    4. Set Restrict Remote Desktop Services user to a single Remote Desktop Services session to Disabled.
    5. Double click Limit number of connections and set the RD Maximum Connections allowed to 999999.

Is the computer hosting Remote Desktop running a server OS such as Server 2012? Multiple active sessions are only supported on a server OS.

The restriction of 1 active Remote Desktop session on a client OS is by design. Only by using modified system files could this limit be removed and that would be in violation of Microsoft's EULA. I won't discuss that.

UltraVNC should do what you want.

I would not use uVNC across the Internet...
...but I would not use RDC/RDP across the Internet either.

You would probably need to change to TeamViewer for that.

Free for home use. Expensive for business use.

The number of concurrent connections is limited.

You do not need an account - but they are free.

I would keep both TeamViewer and uVNC installed...
...because uVNC can go bonkers at times.
Restarting the remote computer cures that.

You could skip installing TeamViewer and just use RDC/RDP to reboot the remote computer, but TeamViewer is better for troubleshooting via remote control. TeamViewer will let you restart the remote computer into the safe mode with networking. You can still connect/control in that safe mode. It is possible to do that with uVNC, but it takes some effort.

You can also use TeamViewer from a smartphone. It is enough to check the status of things or talk the remote user thru an issue.

I've crammed VNC onto a smartphone - it was not pretty.
