Problem with downloading from internet with win7

One of my systems at home: mobo -gigabyte p35 ds3l, with a core 2 duo 1.8 cpu, 2gigs of mushkin memory a 750 WD hard drive running win 7 x64.

Well, the problem I have is that the system is not able to download from the internet. Whatever I download, it will always stop at about 2% done and hang forever.

However, when I install winxp sp3, everything is perfect and it downloads fine.

What I have done... loaded a partition CD and deleted the drive, created a new C: drive, (done this format thing a couple of times) reinstalled the OS from my original Microsoft disk, reinstalled with the same OS from a downloaded version of win 7 x64... and x86... Clean installs. Always the same results.

    I have mem-tested the memory = good
I have HD regenerator tested the HD = good

I have used on-board LAN = no difference
I have used a separate PCI LAN card = no difference
I have used a WiFi dongle = no difference
Changed RJ-45 cables = no difference

I ping the modem/router and all is good. I am able to network this computer on a home system, fine. I can ping internet sites with command prompt. I can surf the internet and load webpages, fine.

    But it will not download.

I installed another browser, Firefox, and the same thing happens, no downloading.

All this is after a clean install from a newly formatted drive.

Throw me a new suggestion, please...

A 64 bit OS with only 2GB of RAM is not going to perform well and could be the reason. A 64 bit OS uses more memory than a 32 bit OS and thus less is left for programs or buffering.

The main reason to have a 64 bit OS is to address more than 4GB of RAM. 2GB of RAM and Win 7 is near edge of "disaster".

May still be the lack of memory, at least a potential (or partial) cause.

You could be right, it's an idea that had not passed through my mind. I do not, unfortunately, have 2gb more ram to put in and experiment with, although just seeing it work on WinXP does say something...

Win XP does not require the minimum memory that Win 7 does. Thus you have more memory available in XP. This might not be the answer but is something to consider.
