Need to replace old router with newer one...

Our internet connection is a 26 Mpbs cable modem via our local cable company. I have been using an old (very old) Linksys router with DD-WRT firmware for the wireless connectivity in our home. It worked OK with iDevices, an Android tablet, and our Roku3 streaming device for the TV, but had some issues when our IP phone from the cable company was in use. The Linksys router died and I replaced the cable modem and dead router with a combination modem/router from the cable company (it was free). Wireless connection speeds went up with the new unit, but it has constant issues with the Roku3 streaming puck. Netflix and Amazon Instant Video will stop connecting during viewing or be unable to connect ad all. The Roku unit is just unable to connect to the internet despite good signal strength. The cable company says it's a DNS issue, but are unable to make it work, which is unusual as they are normally top notch on support. Absolutely no issues with the ethernet connected PC in either setup. I want to go back to a cable modem with an external router, but am not sure what router to get. Suggestions, please.

How did the Linksys die? Like doesn't come on at all or stopped performing a feature or two? Do you still have it if somehow working? Maybe you can use it as a wireless access point. By the way if the router is nice enough, you can simply get a wireless access point if old router can't do the job.

Does the new router allow changing DNS servers? Perhaps a misconfiguration of the DHCP server? Or wrong WPA2 setting?

I know, only questions

It was really old (model WRT310N) and I had to install DD-WRT to get it to even work. It was a well used (from 2005) gift along with an Android tablet (ASUS TF700T). It just failed to operate one day, even checked the power supply, which is good. I would like to get an new router with better features and greater range as we are building a new home and I want to ensure coverage through out the new home. I've gotten all of the use from the Linksys box and was just looking for recommendations on what to purchase to replace it since the ISP's gateway isn't working well. The ISP support technicians have been through their gateway several times and can't seem to make the Roku3 communicate reliably with the video services. They keep blaming the Roku3 saying it's a known problem with that device. Funny, it worked well with the DD-WRT firmware. My first thought for a replacement was a NETGEAR dual band gigabit router model RS6400-100NAS, but was hoping someone with experience would educate me on a better router. Thanks.

You can try disabling router firewall to test and factory reset the Roku (read it in one of their troubleshooting articles, will need to re-set account and subscriptions).

Just finished swapping out the ARRIS 6432 modem/router for a ARRIS stand alone cable modem and a Netgear R6400-100NAS dual band gigabit router. Now all wireless devices work fine, including the Roku3 streaming puck. Used several sources to check out this router and all said it would work fine. It appears that there is a major issue with the ARRIS 6432 gateway supporting Roku, as the problem was not limited to my ISP and has been known for some time. Only cost to us was the price of the Netgear router. Closing this thread.
