Can see internet but not other machines

I have two machines, one Windows7 and the other XP Home, connected via a router. The Windows7 machine is a laptop on wireless, XP machine has a cabled connection.

The Windows7 machine can see the internet fine through the router. Mcaffee "Manage network" running on the Windows7 machine can see the XP machine.

*But* Windows7 Network and sharing can't see my XP machine. Any suggestions?

[Annoyingly, this *was* working until earlier today when I used System Restore to tidy up after a different problem. Now it won't work on any system restore state. I might try removing Mcaffee and reinstalling it but before I go that far, I thought I'd ask you good people for any simpoler explanation...]

I can now see the xp machine and shared folders from my Windows7 machine. I have no idea what changed of significance - I downloaded an update to office and rebooted, but I'd already rebooted several times.

Not the end of the story though - the network sharing centre fails to put the xp machine on the network map saying "the following discovered devices cannot be placed on the map". Anyone know what causes that state? Is it harmless?

JUst a guess, but I would assume that most of what you were looking for is being populated by what's called NETBIOS, and that used to take quite some time....it seems a little snappier now with Win7, but it can still take a little while to propagate and show up in network neighborhood or whatever.

Just passing thru, but I assume you are using homegroup for networking and have IPv6 running. Homegroup is primarily for win 7 machine populations.. I would change form homegroup to workgroup, disable IPv6 for a start. Ipv6 is in network and sharing

Meanwhile, having shut the lid on my windows7 laptop and then resumed I can no longer see my xp machine :-(

Maybe unrelated or maybe not, a friend tells me to junk mcafee and use "Microsoft security essentials " do you think that would be a good move?

I myself am running with a similar problem, I am rolling Windows7 64-bit on my "MainRig" and Windows 7 32-bit on my "HouseRig", both wired to a Linksys V7.2 with firmware upgraded to 7.50.7. there is another firmware upgrade with cisco but i do not feel it would solve anything i may have an issue with. My daughter has a wireless running Vista(i believe 32-bit, havent check all into it.
Now initially when I noticed the problem it was concerning her Wireless PC. Since that time, Her wireless(vista) is in the network map and now my "HouseRig" is outside of the map giving the normal The following discovered device(s) can not be placed in the map. Same for when her was doing this. Now i can see it down below but it is not placed inside of the map as it had been for quite some time. This seems to be some type of switching problem. I have rebooted the modem, router, Rigz. All of it. Originally I had thought it was a conflict of Win7 and Vista, but seeing the Win7 PC out of the map now doing the same as the Vista did, I am just up in arms.
For an issue like this, I really dont know what type of info you may need. My security is Defender and Security Ess with Advanced Care One on the side dealing with privacy things and some registry cleaning. Let me know what I need to do to assist in this matter. I have wondered about doing the DDRT(or whatever) reflash but in fear of making an issue into a problem(s) I have held back. I am decent with PC. No official training to speak of and built my 2 Rigz myself with the first being assisted from a friend in MASS over a voice chat. lol. Built the 2nd myself. Dealt with networking and all but not the expert I need to be, lol. I am just a research and trail and error person and know when to stop before thing get tragic.
