Ok, folks, I fixed my wifi on the offending machine.

The only problem is that I don't know how I fixed it. For some reason, today it decided it would work, with a "network detected" indication from the Intel wifi software.

Recall that I previously determined this was not a hardware problem, because it worked with win xp on the same machine.

The only thing I can think of is the following. I just got a new USB thumb drive that I plugged in to a USB 3.0 expresscard card. Windows started "loading drivers," until "your new device is ready for use." Then I started reformatting the flash drive with NTFS, and noticed that the wifi was now working. So, my only theory is that in installing new device drivers, windows fixed some inconsistency in the driver setup.

It's also the case that Windows update installed a new power management driver last week, and that may also have corrected the problem, which might have been a power manager screwup I guess. I think I would have noticed that the wifi was working in less than a week, though.

So, until further notice, problem is solved. I only wish I were wiser as a result. Oh well.

Well it's not the first time this has happened to any of us and won't be the last I'm sure. At least it's working and if I were you I'd made a backup or two of the PC! While it's working!

    Thanks for reporting-back anyway.

    I did immediately make a sector-level backup.
