Sharing folders as opposed to files (wmp giving trouble)

I have no end of trouble accessing my media over ethernet from my LG home theatre. The usual "Cannot play this file." I suspect that it is wmp which is giving trouble. Difficult to test. I have tried Microsoft Fixit. It always says that it had things to fix. Sometimes this helps, sometimes it doesn't. I have a nasty suspicion I need to do a clean install, but would rather try and find some other solution.

If I use Nero MediaHome 4 it always works. But this has a bug (or is it my PC) that makes it rescan all my files every bootup. That is nearly 4TB worth. And it spends nearly 4 minutes every morning writing to my boot drive - not good for life expectancy.

The later versions of Nero MediaHome and Plex are no good - they share files, instead of folders. You try working your way through a list of 4000 files looking for a specific one using the remote for the home theatre.

Sometimes it works for days, then it stops again. And then I spend 3 days rebooting PC, rebooting home theatre, starting and stopping sharing, swapping the order of switch on, running Fixit, disabling and re-enabling wmp, etc., and then suddenly it works for a few days again.

Any suggestions?

And I never had any problems with the previous home theatre until it broke.
