Need Help w/Modem and Router

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Next week, I am moving and would like advice on which modem and router topurchase as I will also be adding a phone in addition to my internet. The local providers want to charge me every month for their equipment when I would like to just buy it once. Also, I would like to know what type of internet service is available without going through TWC or ATT or the other large providers. I can't remember the term, but purchasing my own internet access at a lower monthly rate than the providers. Thanks.

Hello Janes df now I cannot comment on your providers but the modem and router I reckon it is better to buy an all in one - modem/router and then run hubs if you need extra ports for machines at least that is what I did. For a brand I have had a TP-Link for years now and it has never been a problem the support is great and the price very reasonable.
For example a TP-Link TD-W8968 300Mbps Wireless N USB ADSL2+ Modem Router costs about $50 out here there are more "sophisticated" ones like this TP-Link TD-W8980 N600 Wireless Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router of course - depends on what you use the net for.

Hi,

Thanks for responding. I will follow your suggestion of an all-in-one. I am using the internet for email, surfing, videos, music. Would you still recommend the same modem now that you have more info about my needs. In the meantime, I will look for it. Thanks. Jane

Jane well it is up to you but personally I would get myself a new all in one and use hubs if there are a few machines hooked up I only suggested TP-Link because I have used it now for many years and in all honesty I would not hesitate to buy another one to replace it if the need arose. I am actually at the moment thinking of getting one for my partners house because the one the provider did with the broadband deal (Netgear) is a piece of crap. Plus for what you are using the net for the ones I quoted even the cheaper one would be more than suffice.

David mate usually best mate posting your own thread - get s more looks at than coming i on one already going which also makes for confusion . Anyway I have done some searches and just cannot find that brand or model, so can you check the spelling and make sure the model number is correct please.
As for Jane I would suggest you get a new device because if the device is old then it is likely to not have any support anymore.

David mate if it is going to be that much of a problem do what I suggested to Jane mate the modem/routers are really not that expensive anymore and the brand I suggested (TP-Link) I think one of the better brands and reliable.

But it is your budget and that choice can only be made by you.

Im using "Netis" brand now!it has LAN and WAN port and i can use for wireless and ADSL networks.
I can find upgrades easily and it's a powerful brand i guess.

Hiyya David well I am glad it got sorted because trying to sort those things at times can be more grief than it's worth. The brand mate must be specific to your part of the world as I haven't come across it myself out here. If you do get any more problems then I suggest you look at TP-Link stuff though.

Oh and by the by have a look at this and if you don't mind losing a bit of the Windows "bling" like transparency it is well worth carrying out soem of the tips - I do it on all my machines each time I buy new, make or clean install Optimize Windows 7

I need to update my original post. I recently found out I will be working from home starting this summer and WiFi is not an option for work. My local providers are TWC and ATT. I chose TWC for phone (required for work) and internet due to a negative experience with ATT. I now need advice on either a router/modem combo or separate units for working from home, cable connected. Thanks. Jane
