No no issues with different versions... honestly I had to find out upfront if you are using a downloaded pirated copy. I have assisted many people with strange issues for days only to discover that their problems are related to the hacked or cracked copy they attained from a torrent!

There are several tutorials here to assist in setting up a Homegroup, and honestly I've setup 3 and never had an issue... try this: Homegroup - Create
or any of the other Homegroup tutorials here:

When you'd said something about pirated versions it made me wonder about something. My wife installed windows on the other machine. I did some research and found out how to retrieve the serial keys, checked them on both machines, and they are the same -- which is surprising since they are both fully activated?! Didn't know that was possible, but then again they do have exactly the same hardware, even down to the mouse and keyboard.

I went to the system properties and changed the key and re-activated on the second machine, left and rejoined the network and homegroup after a full reboot. I may have just done something that I had missed before, but now it is working, so it could be a quirk, something I overlooked before, or the key. I'm betting on the product key.

Lesson re-learned -- LABEL the key after you use it! I had something idiotic happen with XP, except it wouldn't activate (odd that 7 did?), and I wanted to beat my brains out when I figured out that I had a Homer moment. Doh!

    Works like a charm now!
