Windows 7: Can't connect to network drive

Hey,

I have a small-business network set up, which is basically just a shared drive. The server is running Windows NT, and when I try to connect to it, my laptop (running Windows 7) asks for a username and password. I've entered the default ones for the router, and I don't know of any other password protections on the network. Any ideas?

you must have a user account configured on the Nt machine that is identical to the user account and password that you use to log onto the Windows 7 Machine. Assuming that this is not an NT Domain, then make sure the workgroup names are the same on both machines....actually even if it is you may still be able to fool it with windows pass through authentication

Same user name and/or password is not necessary. When it asks for user and pass, do not use the router info. Instead, use the other machine's login and pass. You can check the box to remember the info too, so you don't have to enter it each time.

yep...absolutely right, you don't need to create an identical user on the other machine. But perhaps in your answer you should have provided an example of your explanation..because.....i can almost promise the original poster is going to ask. I totally support multiple solutions to the same question, but I didn't think we were here to critique each other's answers.

What are you talking about? I didn't critique anything. I was only stating a basic networking fact.

If you want critique, here it is. The following is completely incorrect:

yep, right again must was a poor choice of words, I probably should have said something like "it would help if you had and identical account. However, having a very old and dusty MCSE in Win NT 4.0 and the original poster said that the server was NT, I am aware that this environment can be a bit problematic, with authentication not to mention that if it's a Primary Domain Controller you would have to have domain credentials. Just thought I was helping.....maybe not.

Ok, but I don't know of any password on the server computer. I tried
Username: Administrator
Password: (blank)

And it said invalid name/password. Is there anything else to try?

Got it figured out! Found the answer at Windows 7 + The specified network password is not correct (connecting to shared drive)

"1. Run the registry editor and open this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
1. If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named
LmCompatibilityLevel
3. Set the value to 1
4. Reboot"

I did have to create it, but after that it worked fine.
