How to access shared Public Folder that is hidden

    Hello,

I've just taken over a "network" of around 30 computers. The previous admin had not setup an actual manage network. No domain controllers, no file servers etc. Everyone is just plugged into a large switch and connected via WORKGROUP.

I've never actually used the Workgroup so I'm having a little trouble. Some of our most crucial files are shared off of one persons computer (Windows 10). The files are in C:\Users\Public\Documents
The Public folder itself is hidden.

6 Windows 7 users have a shortcut to this folder on their desktop. The shortcut points to "\\Windows10PC\Users\Public\Shared Folder"
Sometimes when accessing this folder they are prompted for credentials. They must use the credentials of the local user of the Win 10 PC.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whenver I try to create this shortcut from another desktop I keep receiving "File cannot be found".
If I try to to explore the C$ drive of the the Win 10 PC I cannot gain access dues "Access denied" even though I'm using the local users credentials.

I've tried many different combinations using $ to access the shared folder but to no luck.

So what I've ended up doing is copying the shortcut from another computer (which is setup exactly the way I tried setting it up). When I paste the shortcut it works just find, yet I cannot create a shortuct pointing to the same location.

Sorry for the long post. I hope somone has time to read through and help. I've done a lot of googling and I can only find articles explaining what the Public folder is. I haven't been able to find anything with more details to help me with my problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum on the win10 pc from a cmd prompt type net share what does it show for that share? There is no point in hiding it if everyone uses it create it as a normal share

    Thanks Samuria!

I don't currently have access to the the Win 10 PC. But if I use net view \\win10pc the results are

    Users Disk (UNC)

When I was on the computer earlier I could see through Windows Explorer that the Public folder was hidden and shared.
