It could be because the router (that's not in your control??) automatically has blocked the mac address due to it thinking you've "hammered" it too much, etc...

    A very likely cause.

If you own the router yourself, go and check the logs and config.

You can try using a spoofed mac address in the driver settings, within the device manager for it. Make up anything with random numbers and letters. Keep the numbers within 0-3 and use only A.

    Hi there

    1) Is the Unsecured Wifi yours or are you trying to "camp" on it -- I'm not asking this because of any "Nosey ness" on my part - but there are different protocols.

    2) If it's NOT your network you can only login to it if the router software allows Internet connections -- which means the gateway the router is connected permits it.

It might be a private Internal network that doesn't have any outside access even though the router is broadcasting its ESSID.

In general you can only connect to unsecured networks if they have Internet access.
It might even be a "semi-public" facility that checks your MAC card ID before it allows logon.

The Router is only a TRANSMITTER - the fact it's transmitting doesn't actually mean that it is connected to an Internet service provider.

(Note some work supplied laptops need specific wireless setups to be enabled before any connection is possible -- this is usually done via MAC ID (checks the network card) plus other security stuff. Often these laptops are disabled from accessing the "public Internet" as well).

Check to see if the laptop connects to a genuinely open wi-fi network such as in a Hotel lobby etc).

    Cheers

It may be because the owner of the wifi router figured things out quickly and blocked you on the first try.

Try changing mac address. Can't hurt to test.

Another thing maybe is that with your other comptuer connected, it has reached the limit on how many users can connect to the wireless network? Have you tried disconnnecting off the WiFi with your Vista then try to connect with the limted access computer?
