The way that laptop charging is set up has changed some time ago - it used to be possible to remove the battery completely and plug the laptop into the mains and it would work. I believe it was changed to aid efficiency and to prevent possible glitches causing issues with modern OS's that were not there with older versions.
Well that makes perfect sense to me Nigel and I can only think someone took their eye off the ball coming up with that idea because how could a steady and regulated flow of power interfere with the OS albeit coming from the mains via the adaptor (especially) or the battery?? Seems to me it was designed without considering it could fail because of the increased complexity of the power supply system.

Well just got home and the machine is fully charged and the wifi is hooking up no problems.

I don't know what went on and perhaps it is better I don't know but if it happens again I have a few leads now.

    Thanks to all.

Update I don't know what went on with the machine but it is working fine now and the wifi is picking up both channels from the modem router.

I have it stood on an upturned wire basket (about 9" above the desktop) as it was getting quite hot and in turn that has raised the aerials in front of some aluminium foil I have on the wall from and earlier experiment not that I think it is the fix because the signal was getting through before that but I shall mark this as solved for the time being .
