Windows 7: share an entire drive in workgroup

share an entire drive in workgroup

Skipped Vista, so I'm just learning to hate permissions in Windows 7. How do I enable the two other XP machines in the workgroup to access an entire drive on the Windows 7 machine? I've been able to set up access to individual folders (not even sure how I did that), but not to an entire drive -- in this case data drive D.

Thanks, yes. I've done that for individual folders. The question was how do I do that for the entire D drive (which is data only)?

Hi

its really simple. Right click the drive go to sharing>advanced sharing>enable>apply>OK and its done

Hope this helps.

Okay right through right click drive, sharing, advanced sharing -- then there is no "enable". I see "share this folder" which is checked, and a share name, which I obviously provided in an earlier attempt to do this. For that share I have "everyone" with full permissions, but no dice. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I have the same problem as Benellard and also do not see an "enable". I have been trying to get this to work for days. I am very interested in finding the solution to this.

There is no "enable" just put a check mark where it says "share this folder" then go to "permission's" and put checks there for "everyone" to have access. After that click on "accept" and that drive will be shared with "everyone" in your network.

JFail: For me it turned out to simply be the share name on the XP machine.

On the Windows 7 machine right click the drive you want to share. Select Properties. Select Sharing. Select Advanced Sharing. If there is a name in the Share box, that's what your drive will be called on the network -- it will not appear as, say, D:\, but rather by that share name. If there is no name in the box, add one.

On the XP machine select Entire Network, then Microsoft Windows Network, then Workgroup (or whatever it's called), then the Windows 7 machine. The share name should appear with access to the entire Windows 7 drive.

Of course this assumes that you have permissions set correctly as stated in earlier posts.

benellard:

Thanks for the input. I still have problems. I made sure that drive C on the win 7 machine properties > sharing > advanced sharing shows a share name of "Drive C on Main" and permissions is set to everyone with full control/change/read enabled. "Share this folder" is checked. On the XP machine when I go to tools and map a drive, I can clearly see the Windows 7 machine share name but when I try to connect from the XP machine I get "Z:\is not accessible Access is denied".

I have checked Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center settings > Advanced sharing settings which all seem to be set correctly.
Obviously I am missing some very key point. I'll keep after it. Thanks for your help

I find that fsmgmt.msc (Start search box) is the easiest way to set up & manage shares.

If password protection is on, make sure that all user account have password also, Windows doesn't like un-passworded user account across a network.
Also make sure that everyone is on the same workgroup (WORKGROUP by default).
