i have same problem also, im trying to connect my pc with windows ME OS and other one with windows 7 ultimate. when im trying to access using Home workgroup (ME OS) a pop-up message asking me to provide a network password. password protection has been turn off. local security policy has been disable.
any one could help????
Finally I found an answer to this....
to eliminate the password request that computer 2 asks for when trying to access computer 1, go to computer 1 and do the following:
- control panel
- network and internet
- network and sharing center
- advanced sharing settings
then, in 2nd last section near bottom ("Password protected sharing") choose "Turn off password protected sharing"
Go back to computer 2 and now try to access computer 1. The shares should be accessible now without asking for logon.
Obviously, be careful which (and how) you open files/folders to sharing. You may have to still screw around with certain security settings, too, but NO MORE LOGON ISSUES!!

I've had this problem off and on for some time. The most-recently posted solution worked for me.... until today when it didn't. I've double-checked, and all settings are exactly as I left them.
A few details:
- login name and passwords on all computers are the same
- OS on all computers is 7 premium or ultimate
- all computers are on same switch
- all computers have no problem getting to the internet
- all computers are on the same workgroup AND the same homegroup, with the same homegroup pasword
- all computers have had their "ask for password" option turned off (most recent "fix")
- upon getting the "enter network password" prompt, entering the ONLY password on the entire system results in "login failure: unknown username or bad password"
Sometimes everything works fine, then all of a sudden, it doesn't, then all of a sudden, it works fine again. Sometimes it's one computer that can't connect to anything, sometimes it's one computer that can't be connected to, sometimes it's one particular connection in one particular direction that won't work but the other direction is just fine (A connects to B, but B won't connect to A). Sometimes rebooting one or more affected computers helps, sometimes not. Rebooting the router never helps.
This is absolutely insane! How the bloody bleep do I get my computers to talk to each other all the time? This has only ever happened with Win7 machines. It didn't happen when my network was exclusively XP or 2000 (or at least it stopped happening when I gave every computer the same login).
Searching for this particular problem is also extremely difficult; how do you describe it? What's the problem called? The best I could do was search for the error message and got this thread.
Any help would be appreciated.
If you are printing to a network printer or using software that accesses files on another computer they fail.
It really is not that big a deal to open explorer and click on the other computer and enter the password but....it would be nice if 'remember credentials' actually worked. Or maybe it is working and I just don't understand how it's supposed to work.
None of the solutions work for me. On PC 1 I have to enter a password but on another W7pro PC I don't have to enter a password.
@ChrosPbass - I have no password set on my NAS, one folder I can access, the other asks for "network" password (although I have no idea what a network password is - I only have passwords on my computers).
From Linux I can access any of my folders on my NAS. From Windows 7 I can go through a browser to a web page interface to my "media" folder and access files poorly, but from windows explorer I can not access the "media" browser no matter what tricks I've tried from reading these many forums that post about this problem.
This is clearly a Windows7 fail.
So here I am with the ridiculous situation where in order for me to copy anything from my windows laptop to my "media" folder on my NAS I have to use a third Linux laptop to access the files on the Windows7 laptop and copy them to the NAS!
TheDS is correct. This is absolutely insane.
Linux reports both folders have indeterminate properties as they are SMB share
Windows7 reports that media has no access and backup does "everyone, backup, nogroup" all listed as having access rights.
NAS web page where I can set access etc. reports share folder owner for "backup" is "backup" share owner for "media" is "media" but other than that all access priveliges for CIFS, NFS, AFP, HTTP etc are identical.
Which makes sense. I can access them all through Linux.
But I wonder if the name "media" itself as a group or as a file is problematic - some kind of key word that gets parsed incorrectly?
