Windows 7 - WinXP & Win7 file sharing password problem.

Hi everybody, I have a problem. KARA, my downstairs computer files needs bo be accessed from KYLE, upstairs computer, and vice versa. Whenever I see the KARA computer under the NETWORKS tab, I click it and it says I need a password. The user name is KYLE, and I put my standard password in, no dice. I change it to no password required in the network settings, no dice. The downstairs has everything enabled, aswell as my computer (KYLE) If it's any help, I can do a remote desktop from my downstairs computer with WinXP, to Windows 7, but not from Windows 7, to WinXP. Thanks in advance guys

Hi Kyle, thanks for your post and sorry for the delay.

We've seen this issue a lot, and there are numerous possible causes. Take a look here and here first. There are also some existing SevenForums threads about this issue here, here, and here.

Off the top of my head, I know file sharing between Windows 7 and XP requires the following steps (at least):

1. Host computer must have a different computer name than the Target computer
2. Host computer must have an Admin user account with the same name and same password as the Target computer
3. Both computers must belong to the same workgroup
4. Advanced sharing settings on Windows 7 should look like this, with something similar on XP; [you have the option of trying it without 128-bit encryption, but be warned that your remote desktop connection may be made vulnerable by doing so]

There may be some other things I've left out, but reading the links I posted above will hopefully clear that up. Give it a try and let me know how it goes...
