Windows 7: Troubles with Remote Assistance

Troubles with Remote Assistance

Twice in the past month a friend has called for computer help. He runs Vista HP, and I suggested he try to request RA via Live Messenger. Establishing a chat link with Messenger works fine, but when entering his RA session password on my end the connection attempt fails. We were later able to use TeamViewer successfully, however I'd like to have Windows Remote Assistance available as an alternative.

We both have DSL (different providers).

My end: Windows 7 Pro, a new D-Link DIR615 router ("Compatible with Windows 7"), UPnP enabled, and Windows firewall set to allow RA.

His end: Vista HP, some basic Netgear G router (roughly two years old), UPnP enabled, and Windows firewall set similarly.

Using two computers at home, and logging each into a separate Messenger account, I can easily initiate RA between them (both are Windows 7 Pro). Alternatively, I can do the same via the email+attachment method.

Interestingly, I cannot succeed in using Easy Connect on those two Windows 7 boxes at home.

I'm wondering if this is a matter of router configuration--beyond the very basics I know little about it, and my router seems to have lots of configurable stuff.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
