    Stumped with internet activity


    Hi everyone,
    I recently upgraded to windows 7 64bit about 3 weeks ago from windows vista, and i've been having difficulty connecting to my wireless router. It either goes extremely slow, or does not connect whatsoever. When I look at the connectivity for the router, it says the signal strength is excellent...but it doesn't work properly.

    I'm on a gateway Athlon AMD laptop, using a belgin 54 G router i believe its a f5d7230-4 version 6002.

    The problem here is that my computer works perfectly fine on any other router, just not mine. The other computers and laptops in the house work fine with this Belkin router, just mine doesn't work. Again, this problem only began after i upgraded to windows 7.

    Hi and welcome to SF.

    If you can post what model number the Gateway laptop and the system specs this will help us out.
    Also have you tired to remove the wireless nic from device manager and then reboot letting Win 7 install the drivers it wants. To me it sounds as if the old vista drivers might be causing an issue.
    Remove, Reboot, let windows install and test.

    Simple science says that if the router works fine with some computers and not others, then its not the router.

    Check your LAN / chipset drivers. What else is different on your machine than the others that work better?

    All that said, I was having intermittent connectivity issues with a Belkin 54g and after changing to a Belkin N everything got much better. YMMV

    Its a gateway NV52
    and it's only a problem with this router, no problems with any others.

    And I'm not positive on how to remove, reboot, and install the drivers. If you wouldn't mind explaining how to do that I would appreciate it.

    I was also looking into buying a Belkin N eventually.

    It can still be a problem with the Router. The other computers aren't running Windows 7 and I have helped many here update their router firmware so that it would work with Windows 7.

    No doubt this could be a firmware problem with your belgin 54 G router. You will need to go to your router manufacture page and find the firmware update for Windows 7. There should be instructions for this on the website.

    It could just as easily be the network adaptor or driver being used.

    I've already upgraded the router to the latest firmware version. I too had the same thought that it was a firmware problem originally.

    Also, i've found that when i ping something, it sends more than it receives, which is about 50%.

    I would try to disable IPv6, and the Win 7 homegroup.

    If you're connected wirelessly, it may be channel interference. If there are a lot of other stations or AP's/Routers on the same channel, that will kill throughput even though Signal Strength may be good. The best indicator is SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). Many wireless clients don't display it, so often the best way to fix poor connections is to try other channels. If you can get a scan of all the other AP's in the area, look at the channels they're on. Find a channel that has the least number of AP's, has *low* signal and is at least 2 channels away from any other busy channels. In areas with a high concentration of AP's you may have to settle for the lesser of many evils.

    If your router is set to automatically scan for a channel, turn it off and manually set a channel. Most of the time this "automatic" feature is problematic at best.

    Why can't it be that easy. I've disabled both homegroup and IPv6, yet still i'm having the same problem.
    My signal strength is excellent, yet it loads either unbearably slow, loads the page to 95% and times out, or just doesn't connect whatsoever.
