Windows 7: Win 7 network HP Printer won't install

Win 7 network HP Printer won't install

Trying to install an HP 2100 tn printer through a Linksys router to a Win 7 62 Pro machine. Win 7 drivers for Asus MB, Marvell Card and latest firmware for Linksys router.

Tried Win 7 printer installation routines a jillion times...and it couldn't find the printer (power cycled router and printer several times). Used HP latest network diagnostic but it can't find the printer. Used latest PCL 5, 6 and PS drivers from HP - nothing. Used netsniffer with HP diagnostic and it looks like the diagnostic sees the printer (reports the correct i.p. address) but doesn't identify it as a printer.

Went back to XP where the printer works and found it is currently working with IPX protocol.

Anyone have any ideas? I don't want to buy a new printer, or stick with XP.

Thanks to all replies.

Windows 7 Ult, Windows 8.1 Pro,

Maybe the Windows 7 drivers from the HP page made just for your HP 2100tn printer might help.

Did you try putting in the IP/Subnet mask and Gateway manually into the printer

Yup - tried the latest drivers (Win 7 x64) from HP (Dated Dec 12, 2009 I think). Went through the installation routine but the drivers couldn't find the printer - even when I entered the i.p. address manually. This doesn't surprise me because HPs network installation programs have been really spotty, and I have always used one from about 2001 that actually works.

Not sure where to put in the subnet masks, etc. I've entered the i.p. address for the printer but Win 7 still can't find it.

I think I need an IPX protocol running under Win 7. I've checked a few times and the printer has always run perfectly using IPX in XP, but I understand that IPX is no longer supported by Win 7.
Thanks to all.

Windows 7 doesnt seem to play well with ipx based printing. Why not use ip based printing on that printer as well, it will work side-by-side with the ipx printing.

there is an IPX driver that was originally for vista. because IPX is not supported since vista... try to google it...
but install at you're own risk

Unless your network does not run ip, which it should considering windows 7 needs it to connect. Just setup ip printing on the printer itself, really it will be much easier than hacking a driver to make it work.

I work in an environment with over 2500 hp printers of various models, the ipx driver has both compatibility and reliability issues. The simplist resolution to the problem is to enable ip printing on the printer and setup the Windows 7 machine to print over ip.

Thanks for the ideas - here's a brief progress report.

On Win XP - where the printer works fine from 3 desktops, 1 laptop and 1 netbook
Pinged its i.p. address but got no response
Used telnet to i.p. address and got no response
Used the HP network diagnostic under XP and it reports no printer but sees all other computers on the network - again the printer works fine.

On Win 7 64 bit - printer doesn't work and same results - no response from ping or telnet. HP diagnostic can't identify the printer.

I'll keep looking around the net for ideas and report back here if I get anything.

Thanks to all.
