    There are a few items to look at when setting up Windows 7 on a network.

    Let's start with a few questions:

    Can you provide a description of your network? How many machines? What OS's? What options did you set for Advanced Sharing Settings under Network and Sharing Center?

    They are all hard wired and run through a linksys router. I can access the internet and if I turn on and offthe other computers "they are running Vista" this win7 computer see's them come and go in the network folder as I turn them on and off. When they are on and appear in the folder if I click on them I get the error above. I have folders shared on this win7 machine and the other computers can see it and access the folders. There is one weird thing I notice in the sharing options I select "turn on network discovery" and save changes but when I go back in the turn of network discovery button is selected all the others stay on what I select for them. I have everything allowed and shared and no passwords.

    What other options have you enabled in the Advanced Sharing Settings?

    It also gives an error number and I googled it and here is what someone with the same problem replied

    "Thanks for your Help. In windows 7 had missing TCP/IP Netbios helper enable."

    What are they talking about?

    Network discovery is off because I turn it on and it keeps turning itself of.

    file and printer sharing is turned on

    public folder sharing is on

    media streaming is on

    file sharing is on

    password protected sharing is off

    homegroup connections is allow windows ........

    What about encryption? Is it set for 56 bit or 128 bit?

    Ok I believe I figured it out from searching the internet. Some one said the "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" was not started so I went under computer management and service and it was there and not started I started it and I can now get on the other computers.

    Interesting, that should have been started by default. Good catch!

    Well it wasn't set to automatic and this I found in a post from 2007. I set it to automatic and then started it and all is good now for me. I will reboot and see if it starts it self again. Thanks again for everyone's patience and help
