Network folder suddenly unavailable

On my work network, I have a shared folder that I can access without issue. However, out of the blue, there is now one specific subfolder in this shared folder that I cannot acess. It says the location is not available and I do not have permission to access the folder. Every other user can access the subfolder without issue. I can access all other subfolders at the same location except for this one. No permissions or sharing settings would have been changed. The problem is isolated to my machine accessing this one specific folder. Any ideas what might have caused it to become suddenly unavailable like that or is there anything I could do to regain access?

Does that mean you can log onto another computer and you will have access to the folder in question? I understand that "Every other user can access the subfolder without issue." I'm asking what happens when using your credentials on another computer.


Generic advise would be to re-apply the security settings from the top folder down.

Yes, I can remote into another machine using my credentials and I can access the folder without issue. The problem seems to just be on my local machine.

Are the credentials being stored locally via Credentials Manager? If yes, delete the credentials, restart the computer and test getting to that folder again.

Or are the credentials coming from an Active Directory server/domain?

I checked Credential Manager but I didn't see anything stored there. And I apologize, I'm not terribly familiar with this stuff. I'm guessing that the credentials would be coming from an Active Directory server. I will normally log on to the network and that would determine which folders I can/cannot access.

What happens if someone else logs onto your machine using their credentials. They can do that via Remote Desktop connection or while sitting at your computer. Can they get to the sub-folder in question?

I still have no idea what could cause this or how to fix it. So I'm just gathering info before asking for other forum members to help.

This network sounds like it is in an office setting. Is there a help desk or some form of IT support where you work? If so, what do they say about this issue? As silly as it sounds, can they re-apply the security settings to the folder/share?

I had someone log onto my machine using their credentials and they were unable to access that specific sub-folder just like I am when I am logged into my own machine.

Yes, we do have an IT department and they have been looking into this for a few weeks without any luck. I think they've tried removing my access and then re-adding it, but it hasn't worked.

Thank you for your assistance with this. It really does seem to be isolated to just accessing the folder directly from my machine, whether I am logged in using my credentials or another user logs into my machine using their credentials. Everything else seems to work correctly.

Different machine/my credentials - Yes Access
Different machine/other user's credentials - Yes Access

I will go ahead and see if my IT helpdesk can help me out any further.

This makes it look like something with your entire computer. I'll ask other forum members to chime in.

You might be looking at rebuilding the entire operating system.
