I have a laptop with Windows 7 and a desktop with Vista. My laptop can see the desktop but can not access anything and I get a message I do not have permission. I have shared everything out and both machine are in the Workgroup and on the same subnet mask. How can I access my desktop with my laptop.

Take a look at the advanced sharing settings. You'll find them in Control Panel => Network and Internet => Network and Sharing Center. There's a link at the left.
Items to look at are Network Discovery (ON), File and Printer Sharing (ON), Password Protected Sharing (OFF) and File Sharing Connections.

I've got much the same problem. I've got a main PC on which I'm running Vista. My XP netbook has no trouble accessing the files on the PC. I have a laptop running W7. It shows on the network and I can select the Home PC in Windows Explorer but when I try to go deeper into the files it says I don't have access. The same is true when I try to access the W7 laptop from the Vista Home PC. Any ideas? I've already checked all the settings for file sharing/public file sharing and switched off password protected sharing and network discovery is on. Help!

You may try disabling IPV6. It's been know to create various problems. What about HomeGroup Connections? How is it set?
Hi, Thanks for the tip. Have disabled IPV6 and can now access files on the laptop from the Home PC but I still can't access the PC from the laptop. It's now coming up with a dialogue box that says I don't have permission to access and that I need to contact the administrator to request access?
I don't have a homegroup set up on the laptop as I don't have any other W7 devices at the moment.

Many have noticed that settings for Homegroup connections can affect workgroups as well. You may want to take a look at that parameter.
Without a homegroup set up I can't see any settings I can adjust. Are you suggesting I should create a homegroup even though I won't be using it? Apologies if missing something obvious.
The Homegroup Connections is in with the Advanced Sharing Settings. Look a little further down the page.
Sorry, found it. Have changed from Allow Windows to manage the connections to using User Accounts. Rebooted both pc and laptop but hasn't made any difference I'm afraid.
