Win 7 cannot connect to Xp pro

Trying to connect to xp pro from windows 7 hm pre. I can see the xp computer in network on windows 7. Keep getting prompt "enter network password", enter password but it does not work (using workgroup pw). I have shared folders on the xp computer and made sure "workgroup" is the group name in xp. I have no problems reaching the win 7 machine from the xp machine. I had no probs networking to the vista comp. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. thanks

Welcome to the forum win7use,

If you are getting a password prompt after setting up a Workgroup it may have to do with the Advanced settings window where it says "turn on password protected sharing"

You should go to the XP machine and run the network set up wizard which will make things much easier. Be sure and allow sharing permissions when setting up the XP machine.

After that it pays to make sure the Advanced Network Settings are all as they need to be to allow for sharing between your XP and Windows 7 machine. Make sure the settings look like the picture below.

Toggling between password protected sharing on or off in the Home and Work Advanced settings window may help turn off that password prompt.

If that doesn't turn off the password prompts it sometimes helps to use the same user name and password on all machines. Although the machine names still need to be different.

great suggestions, unfortunately win 7 still will not allow me to connect to xp pro (still get password prompt). any & all further suggestions appreciated. I'll keep trying..thanks

turn off simple file sharing on xp pro box.

add "everyone" group to the ACL on the shared folders.

What's in the Security Tab of the folder's Properties. Have you tried putting in the username which you have attempted to connect to the share with?

these are all good suggestions & i tried them all, including in xp: disabling simple folder, sharing folder, adding "everyone" to security policy, clicking 'share' in network setup, changing homergroup name..clearly see the xp computer on win7 "network", even disabling firewall, but still getting annoying pw prompt...
still accepting any suggestions..
it is possible that i need to edit the group policy on smb pw on the win 7 comp, but w/home premium you can't gpedit.msc..its not included in that case i'm sol unless i upgrade win 7 unless someone knows how to edit group policy on home premium

You added the Everyone group, what about actual user name and here's a good one.

Type in computername\username as the user id.

xp security won't accept it..says "not a recognized domain"..this is really frustrating b/c unlike most my win 7 has no problems recognizing the xp computer...i see it there...furthermore I can access all folders from win 7 comp on xp, I just can't access xp from win7 b/c the pw prompt..i would've given up but i seem so close..maybe i am delusional..seems odd xp would be better at mapping netwk dr

I meant when it asks you for the userid and password. Put that in as the userid. This is saying you are connecting to that computer (the left part of the backward slash) with that user name (the right part of the slash).
