I was just wondering if this has been solved yet, as I seem to be facing the same problems as AquiloNow.

following up on what YupYup said is it possible this is build 7057's fault. I am running Windows 7 x64 build 7057 and these networking problems apply to me too.

Both a Windows Xp Home (wireless laptop) and Windows XP Pro (wired desktop) cannot network with my wired windows 7 desktop. both XP computers see the 7 desktop, but give that same error as Aquillo (not accessible might not have permission etc) showed IF i try to access a folder that is based on the same harddrive that windows is installed in. IE I cant access the Desktop folder or My Documents folder that i shared BUT i can access a seperate hard drive that i shared (the D drive) that is installed on the Windows 7 machine.

the windows 7 computer cannot see either windows XP computer, or the shared printer that is on the XP Pro desktop, but it can see the two vista laptops that are also on the network and can access them just fine. everyone plays nice except windows 7 and XP.

thanks for the patience if you read all that!

When in xp I have this path to my widows7.. start\my network places\view workgroup computers\ (other places) microsoft windows network\ workgroup\win7\ public or users.
other places is a second menu
down from network tasks. this is how I get there? Is anyone else seeing this path from a networked xp pc?

Yes that is how it works in XP, there is nothing wrong with XP it is only windows 7 build 7057 that has problems. You are not on build 7057 that is why everything works for you.

To sum things up here are the problems related to build 7057

    1. XP can not access shares on windows 7 C: drive
    2. Windows 7 can not browse XP machines but UNC paths work

.........right.... figured i shoulda asked WHAT build this was concerning... now i see this is about 57? Come on guys... why all the constant upgrades? find a stable build then stick with it until something proven to be a stable build has some big influencial changes in the OS. Not much will change from 7000 til RC... this will be the "play-around" stage. with groups testing and fixing other stuff with older builds, hanging new curtains and drapes possibly (icons and sounds) but this will be all trial and not geared towards total stability, hence the number of new builds that seem to be released every 10-14 days.

The core structure of win7 will not change from the public beta... you may find or not find more or less bells and whistles in the RC/RTM builds... but until it goes RC, any build will be considered unstable in most communities and not recommended to upgrade if using as a primary OS.

Also you will find MORE support for 7000 builds than you will for the latter builds.... unless the "community" finds a stable newer beta build (some like 48). This goes for anything, not just this OS Beta test. If you have something running great, the rule of thumb is to not try and "fix" it or "upgrade" it... or atleast be one of the firsts to do so. I learned this the hard way a long time ago with router firmware upgrades. Just a little fyi.

Digger - I purposefully stayed with 7000 build, for that reason.

    Hmm...

Might it be easier if someone wrote a 'book for dummies' guide version of being able to discover and access between an XP and a W7 machine on a network?

I feel bad, for I MUST be doing something wrong here.

Thank you to everyone for their kind help so far!

What router are you using? could be a permision not to allow in it? I know you said firewalls are off right? If you find the dummies book let me know cause I could use a copy also. Good luck with your problem.

Sorry if this was answered already but if you type in \\Blackrose in your address bar does your XP machine appear?

When I type in my xp machine \\BLACK , it shows all my shared folders, also shows BLACK in the list of machines in the left column under Network.
So, what i did when I saw BLACK listed under Network is dragged it up to Favorites. Now i can easily get to it when I need.

Its not perfect but it work until windows gets it fixed.

    Hope that helps
