media sharing in windows media player 11

hi,

I'm trying to share my windows media player library that is on my win 7 pc with my xp laptop.

I can navigate from my laptop to folders on my win 7 pc and play files that way but I'm trying to get the library option working.

Both computers are in the same workgroup and are both visable in the same workgroup from my xp laptop. However if I go into network on my Windows 7 pc I can see the laptop in the computer section but not in the media device section.

When i then go into the sharing options on the Windows 7 windows media player i can not see the xp laptop so I can't allow sharing.

I guess the problem is that my xp laptop is only showing up as a computer and not a media device? anyone know why this is?

I have turned of my firewall to check that and it has no effect.

thanks

You can't share Library's with any computer other than Windows 7. Library sharing can only work if all the machines in the LAN are Windows 7. Although you should be able to stream and share your music using Workgroups.

You should be able to share the WMP files by making these adjustments. Click on more media options to allow for media sharing with your XP machine.

I think you misunderstand, i'm not talking about Windows 7 libraries I'm talking about the files that I have in windows media player. When i open windows media player there is a entry in the left hand column for other libraries and i can see my flatmates and he doesn't have windows 7

I didn't misunderstand from what I'm reading here.

Sounds like you are attempting to share Library's to me. There is no Library sharing option for XP, you can't share Library's with the XP machine even if you can see them. Library sharing is a Windows 7 Homegroup option only. But like I said before, you can share all your music files using the Workgroup network.

I know which setting your talking about, it works for me because all my machines are Windows 7. But that is a very slow way to access Librarys compared to the regular interface. There is no chance that will work properly unless all machines are Windows 7 and you also would need to set up Homegroups for that to work properly which you can't do with Windows XP.
