Well I did it the other way around. That is, I knew her username and password on her computer and I made an account with the exact same details on mine. We both just have windows firewall. Mine was turned off to avoid complications while trying to get the network working. She had previously told me that hers was off too, but we just checked and it turns out it was on. We turned it off.

I just shared a folder with her, and it showed up on her computer. But when she tried to open the folder it said that she doesn't have permission.

Oh, and how do I tell if she is on home on HER computer? I thought this home/work thing was new to windows 7.

Open up her Network and Sharing Center

    Under "View your Active networks"
Do you see a House, Park Bench, or like a Skyrise...

House is the one you want...

A firewall will also cause compuers not to show up in the network map as well so be careful with that

what is your internet firewall called?

As I said, the files/folders being shared are not accessible to her even though they are now visible from her computer. Now even when I choose 'share with everyone' she cannot access them. Previously she could access them when I chose 'share with everyone', so now the situation is worse rather than better.

EDIT: Just saw your latest post, will respond soon

It sounds like you are talking about Windows 7. I am the only one on Windows 7. She is on XP SP3.

We are both just using the Windows Firewall that comes with the OS. Both are turned off.

I really appreciate it, but as I've never used remote desktop and don't know how it works, I don't feel comfortable giving any control to anyone.

Thank you so much for the offer though. :) I really do appreciate it.

your not going to give me any control... your going to give me a view of your desktop.... and then i will see what your doing and then monitor and type what you are going to do... you only give me contorl when you want me to have it... usually i dont need control.... i rather you learn thenf or me to do it for you anyways *lol*

as you pull up your settings, i can see them and correct them if i have too.

If you go into MSN Messenger... you can do it that way...its very easy... I was helping a guy out in russia... we finally narrowed it down that his router was a peice of crap

with all due respect, without seeing pictures and things like that of your settings, its very hard to tell....

    so lets see...

can you give us a photo of your Users on your computer, a photo of your firewall settings, Photo of your IPconfig /all settings.. i need to know how you have your computer set up, and a photo of your network map please.
