Wireless Adapters for Windows 7/64-bit

With your particular wireless network adaptor Linksys WMP54G no compatiblity at all with Win 7 so upgrading is a good idea.

It depends on what your router can do. If your router supports wireless N then go that route for the adaptor also. Wireless G is also fine and your router most likely will support that. Any on this list will work but the limitation may be with your router as far as signal strength goes. You need to choose pci-e or usb also. The Compatiblity list shows some that have gone through the testing process for Windows 7.

As far as Linksys goes this list looks pretty good for having Win 7 support, I would go with one of the WPA-2 security versions and wireless N if your router supports it.

The Windows 7 Compatibility Center has information about thousands of software and hardware products - you might want to start your search there. For example, this list shows only those wireless network adapters that have been tested and certified 'Compatible with Windows 7' (see the logo) by Microsoft.

The lists are a starting point, but I read on the 'net about numerous adapters that ARE 'supposedly' certified and tested, that don't have windows 7 or 64-bit drivers, and reviewers say don't work, or don't work well.

I understand, but being an MS rep I can't give specific product endorsements... just thought that list might help narrow your search a bit.

Here's a quote from a Windows Team blog post about the Windows 7 Logo Program:

We focused on robust testing requirements to ensure optimal Windows 7 experience. Products that receive the Logo are checked for common issues to minimize the number of crashes, hangs, and reboots experienced by the user

It's not a perfect system of course, and the Windows 7 Compatibility Center has testing information on thousands of products that don't have the logo. But it's important to understand the rigor and extent of the testing required in this program. Companies don't just pay Microsoft to slap the logo on their box - the product has to work really, really well. And as the blog post says, the program's fundamental purpose is "to help customers make better purchase decisions," which is all I'm trying to do here :)
