I can usually do 20MB in about 15 minutes or so. I never had to do anything special to my network just to transfer files and the firewall ports are opened up automatically when you set up file sharing.
I assume that you meant 20GB in about 15 minutes. If you are moving 20GB in 15 minutes or so, you must be running faster than 100 megabits per second. Since that only supports about 9GB or so in 15 minutes.

Your right I lost my G. Yes it's 1000Mbps on the lan for me. 1000 on the WAN also but i'll never see close to that. His file transfer rate seems way too slow I agree.

Are you getting faster speeds when you are accessing the Internet? Can you change out the network cables to see if you have a bad cable?
My internet connection feels fast - for an internet connection.
SpeedTest.net says my download speed is 7.32Mb/s (PING 72ms, Upload 0.37Mb/s)...

...But I am used to very much faster speeds when copying data locally.
    (I'm guessing c.10MBytes/second or so?)

Can you get roughtly the same speed test to the Internet from both computers?

You are right, you should certainly be getting around 10 megabytes per second on your local network.

Wait a minute, could it be down to the wrong type of Ethernet cable?

Cat 5 should be fine for those speeds. I use cat 6 because supposed to be faster but no big diff really.

Yes, a cat3 cable could technically be used...but is only rated for 10 megabits per second...which comes out to 125,000 bytes per second.

Cat 5 is certified to support 100 megabits per second over 100 meters (327 feet).
Cat 5e and 6 is certified to support gigabit per second over 100 meters (327 feet).

Do you have any Firewlls or Antivirus running

Like i said ... these anti virus can be a pain in the *** and sometimes they lke to scan files as they leave and come in the network... so if yoursending files, and its scanning that could be a big slow down.

Look on the cable your using to connect...

    What CAT does it say 3, 5, 5e, 6?

I just found something that might be of some help:

Slow Network File Copy issues in Windows 7 caused by Remote Differential Compression | Windows Reference

It relates to a compression feature in Windows 7. You could give that a try and let me know if it makes a difference.
Yes Remote Differential Compression was set on.
No, turning it off didnt make any difference.
A silly question on my part: Did you reboot after making the change?

Okay I plugged in some different spare Ethernet cables - maybe a FEW% faster now... but it still feels *very* slow - gradually crawled up to about 660KB/s - I but I'm pretty sure I was getting about 10 times that when copying windows XP to windows XP...
