Windows 7: Map network drive with netbeui

Win7 SP1 Enterprise edition 64-bit
Production machines...

This topic is already 'old'...

I still remember switching from Win2K to WinXP back in 2008 (jeez.. also already 6 years ago.. )

Then it was fairly easy. After some searching, Windows XP did not support Netbeui protocol anymore, but it still was there as an additional download feature.

Now, there's a question whether or not to install new clients. WIN7 64 bit...

Now, I know the IT is evolving, but in this case, there's an ultrasonic detection system, quite expensive.

This machine STILL has a Windows 98 machine on it running software and thus, using NetBeui protocol to present the raw data to an application written to read and thread this raw data, ending up as record both in excel and an access database.

Works just fine.

However, if I get the question, I've read some threads and cannot give the right answer. Only that it's NOT possible in any way to update the ultrasonic control machine. This requires an additional cost which you really don't want to know. it's way too high and will never be granted approval.

This is a production unit which checks material for any flaws of holes based on ultra sonic sensors and gives back quality figures, used to get the right quality certificates that need to be provided when shipping the basic product itself.

So, It's or try and error based or stay with the way of working with 32 bit WinXP, installed on a new machine.

Could I try to emulate using virtual XP machine ? Possible, I don't have a clue. But I'm pretty sure this will be one of the questions that will rise. How to solve this one ? Knowing I HAVE to stick to NetBEUI protocol.

if I find a way that I can run Netbeui on a Win7 Pro x64 client, I'm going to be very glad

Any suggestions ?

please advise, all critics and or suggestions are more than welcome !
