Sharing between Windows 7/Windows XP -- going nowhere

    Here's my situation...

I've got two computers, one in my bedroom (Windows 7 Professional) and an HTPC in my living room (Windows XP Professional [SP3]). My Win7 PC also has all my data storage and I want to ultimately be able to stream my music and movie collection from that computer on to my Living Room PC (connected to my big screen TV).

These computers are both connected to the same wireless network.

I've gone through all the drives on both systems right clicked, enabled sharing, given full permission, etc.

However, while on the living room XP computer, if I navigate to Network Places, there are no computers to be found. It doesn't even see the Windows 7 system. While on the Windows 7 system, I can see the Windows XP computer and the drives that I've shared, however when I go to certain folders, I get a message that says I don't have permission.

    Can anyone help me?

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

    Hi steve and welcome

I can almost bet you are using "homegroup" for networking. If you are win 7's homegroup is for win 7 only environments. In mixed environments "workgroup" model gives easier sharing, foaster downloads, etc. You can test it yourself. Just create a new network using 'workgroup' if you sharing works you can kill IPv6, and homegroup

Make sure that these settings are correct in Advanced Sharing settings window. After you set up the Workgroup on the Windows 7 machine you should run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP machine and allow for file and printer sharing along the way.
This tutorial might also help you.

Okay, part of the problem was the homegroup.

Now both computers can see each other and all their drives. However, I still can't access most of the folders even though I've got all the permissions set to full control for every drive.

My advanced sharing options match what chev65 has posted (at least on the Windows 7 machine).

On xp, in Computer Management, go to Shared folder and screenshot it.

Be sure that you leave the Homegroup officially from the Windows 7 machine.

    Homegroup - Leave

This inadvertent Homegroup joining in a mixed Op system problem seems to create quite a few problems with sharing after the fact.

You may also need to edit the permission settings. This turtorial is pretty good for getting the permissions set correctly.

In your workgroup, why do you got doubles?

did you check your firewall... that plays a big part in it too...

That is because he hasn't left the Homegroup yet most likely so it appears that two networks have been created.
